Women's Basketball Signs Jayla Russ

The freshman comes to EMU from Arlington, Wash.
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- Eastern Michigan University Head Women's Basketball Coach Fred Castro announced, July 5, that Jayla Russ (Arlington, Wash.-Arlington) has signed a scholarship agreement to join the Eagles for the 2016-17 campaign. The 6-foot-1 freshman will add depth to the Green and White's frontline in Castro's first season at the helm of the EMU women's basketball program.
"We are ecstatic to get a player of Jayla's caliber this late in the recruiting process," stated Castro. "I have had the opportunity to watch Jayla play for three years while in Washington. Simply put she's a winner; her ability to play the post position and stretch the defense because of her shooting ability will be a huge asset to us."
Russ, a 2016 graduate of Arlington High School in Arlington, Wash. comes to Eastern Michigan as a four-year varsity letterwinner, starting in all four seasons as an Arlington Eagle. As a freshman, Russ earned second team all-state tournament team honors before winning three straight All-Wesco Conference honors from her sophomore through season, being named to the second team as a sophomore and the First Team All-Wesco 3A North squad in both her junior and senior campaigns. In her final season at Arlington, Russ was named a team captain and averaged 12 points and five rebounds per contest.
In addition to her talent on the court, Russ put together a strong high school career as a thrower on the Arlington track and field squad. A four-year letterwinner on the team, Russ took fourth place at the state tournament in shot put, while also earning First Team All-Wesco honors in the shot and discus throws. She was a three-time all-conference awardwinner for track and field. Additionally, Russ was named to the Arlington High School Honor Roll in her senior year.
