AUSTIN, Texas (EMUEagles.com) — Redshirt junior Willy Fink (Maumee, Ohio - Maumee) of the Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team was named a Third Team Academic All-American, announced today, June 24, by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
To be eligible for Academic All-America consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.
Fink had a fantastic indoor season for the Eagles, highlighted by a NCAA Championships appearance in the 3000m. Ultimately, Fink was named a Second Team All-American after finishing 11th in the nation with a time of 8:07.81. Fink was also a First Team All-Mid-American Conference honoree after winning both the 3000m and 5000m at the MAC Championships, Feb. 26-27.
The redshirt junior's outdoor season was no different, as Fink was named the MAC Championship Most Valuable Performer following the outdoor conference championships. Specifically, the Maumee, Ohio native qualified to the NCAA Championships yet again, this time running in the 3000m steeplechase. Ultimately, Fink finished 20th with a time of 8:52.43. To get to the national championships, Fink turned in one of the best 3000m steeplechase marks in program history, clocking in at 8:40.60 at the NCAA East Regional, May 26-28, which was also the fifth-best mark in the EMU record books.
