Six seniors played in their final game for the Green and White
KALAMAZOO, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University softball team wrapped up the 2016 campaign Saturday, May 7, at Fran Ebert Field versus Western Michigan University. Despite a strong pitching performance, the Eagles (19-32, 9-14 MAC) closed out the season with a 4-0 defeat.
In the circle, sophomore Trisha Trujillo (Whittier, Calif.-California) turned in another solid showing, but the EMU offense failed to provide any run support. Trujillo went 5.1 innings, giving up four runs on seven hits. Junior Abbie Minsker (Howell, Mich.-Hartland) completed the game, allowing just one hit in 0.2 innings of work. Offensively, the Green and White were outhit, 8-4, with four different Eagles picking up a hit apiece.
A one-out knock by Wyman in the second was for naught as a strikeout and groundout ended the Eagles threat.
The Broncos (21-26, 12-10 MAC) put the leadoff runner aboard in its half of the second, and attempted to move the runner with a sacrifice bunt, but the Eagle defense prevailed. The Bronco batter laid a bunt down the third base line where senior Abby Davidson (Westerville, Ohio-Olentangy Orange) charged the slow roller and fired to second, getting the lead runner. Sophomore Haley Hostetler (New Haven, Ind.-Woodlan) completed the double play, tossing to senior Abi Clark (Clinton, Mich.-Clinton) at first before Trujillo induced an inning-ending fly out.
Western Michigan claimed the lead in the fifth, ripping a two-out two-run single to right center to break the scoreless tie.
Senior Mady Hostetler (New Haven, Ind.-Woodlan) set the Eagles up for their best scoring chance of the afternoon. Hostetler sent a scorcher down the third base line to get the Green and White rolling. Freshman Lucy Lopez (Ventura, Calif.-Stockdale) entered as a pinch runner and swiped second to move into scoring position with one out. Senior Elaine Whitbeck (Holland, Mich.-West Ottawa) then used her wheels to reach with an infield single, putting runners on the corners with one away. Back-to-back pinch hitters were retired via ground outs, keeping the Eagles from pushing a run across the plate.
EMU went down in order in the sixth, taking the game to the bottom of the inning with WMU leading, 2-0. The Broncos pushed their lead to 4-0 on a two-run single up the middle, ending Trujillo's day. Minsker entered in relief and the Green and White turned a 4-6-3 double play to end the inning without any further damage.
The Eagles headed to bat for the final time, but came up short as three consecutive strikeouts ended the game, 4-0, in favor of WMU.
EMU's season comes to a close just short of the postseason with a 19-32 overall record that includes a 9-14 mark in Mid-American Conference play. The loss also marked the final game of the careers of six seniors: Abi Clark, Abby Davidson, Aoife Duffy, Myranda Barnes, Mady Hostetler, and Elaine Whitbeck.
