YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University Department of Athletics announced today that EMU men's and women's swimming and diving student-athletes have received a $5,000 challenge gift from The Arm of Honor Alumni Association.
The gift will support the Olympic Dreams of eight student-athletes (six men and two women) whom have qualified for the 2016 Olympic Trials, being held this June through early July. Every gift made between now and July 1 to the swimming and diving teams will be matched up to $5,000 by the Arm of Honor.
"As President of the Arm of Honor Alumni Association, we are pleased to offer this challenge in support of this excellent team of EMU student athletes," stated Arm of Honor President Phil Riggio. "As a former EMU men's basketball student-athlete (1968-71), I know how hard these young men and women work. They deserve nothing less than our full support as they pursue their Olympic Dream."
"I have been around EMU Athletics since 1954; and EMU swimmers have been leaders athletically and academically throughout their history," remarked fellow Arm of Honor member Kirk Profit . "This program has more than earned the support we are so proud to offer ."
"Funding athletics is a constant endeavor," remarked Head Swimming and Diving Coach Peter Linn. "The Arm of Honor has reached out with a challenge gift to assist our Olympic Trial qualifiers giving them the opportunity to pursue the ultimate goal and reach the pinnacle of their sport. I hope our alumni will take up this challenge to pay forward and help this generation of EMU swimmers and divers to realize their dreams."
