McDermitt and Bogdanova Earn Spots at NCAA Championships

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team wrapped up its time at the NCAA East Regional today, May 28. The Eagles, who had one student-athlete earn a spot yesterday, qualified two more to the NCAA Championships, June 8-11.
The Eagles began the day with the 1500m quarterfinals, where sophomore Natalie Cizmas (Clinton Twp., Mich. – Chippewa Valley) represented the Green and White. Cizmas put up a fierce fight throughout the race, remaining within the top-two until the final 200 meters. Ultimately, the sophomore finished ninth in her heat, and 16th overall, clocking in at 4:24.77.
The triple jump saw sophomore Dace Dreimane (Ventspils, Latvia - Ventspils Gymnasium No. 1) turn in the best jump of her career and a 19th-place finish. Dreimane finished with a mark of 12.91 meters/ 42 feet 4.25-inches, putting her atop the EMU record books by a margin of .25 inches over the previous record set by Joy Inniss in 1994.
Finally, the Green and White concluded the day with a pair of distance runners in the 5000m. Both had fantastic races, with Jordann McDermitt (Davison, Mich. – Davison) finishing fifth in her heat, and 10th overall, clocking in at 16:13.61 to earn a spot at the NCAA Championships. Just behind her, junior Alsu Bogdanova (Kazan, Russia – Lyceum #83) finished sixth in her heat, and 11th overall, crossing the finish line in 16:16.13 to also punch her ticket to Eugene. This marks the first time that both have qualified to the national championships.
The Eagles will conclude their season at the NCAA Championships, June 8-11. The team will be represented by senior Sofie Gallein (Gits, Belgium – University of Leuven) in the 3000m steeplechase and McDermitt and Bogdanova in the 5000m.
