The Eastern Michigan University baseball team fell in game one of the weekend series to Northern Illinois University, 9-5, Friday evening, May 13, at Oestrike Stadium.  Prior to the game, a ceremony was held honoring the 1975-76 EMU College World Series teams.

The Eagles (19-29, 9-10 MAC) tied the Huskies (20-28, 13-9 MAC) in hits at nine apiece. Leading EMU in the contest was sophomore Brennan Williams (Commerce Township, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern) who had a 2-for-5 game including his first career triple, as well as three runs driven in.  It was his team-best third 3-RBI game of the season.

Senior Austin Wilson (Valrico, Fla.-Bloomingdale Sr.) also collected a hit in the contest, extending his hitting streak to 15 games, the longest for an Eagle since 2012.  He swiped a pair of bases as well, his 13th and 14th of the season.

On the bump, junior Kevin Shul (Albuquerque, N.M.-Albuquerque Academy (College of Southern Nevada)) had the best outing of his short time at EMU going a career-high 4.2 innings while only allowing two hits and one run, while striking out two as well.

The Huskies were the first on the board after a couple of miscues.  A single to left field turned into a runner on second after an error.  After getting to third on a groundout, he scored on a passed ball, giving NIU the 1-0 lead into the bottom of the third.

The Eagles responded in the second with a pair of hits.  After a bunt single, Wilson reached first on a fielder's choice.  He stole second, and was later driven in on the triple from Williams to dead center, tying the game at one after three.

The floodgates opened in the fourth for NIU as they plated four more unearned runs.  A throwing error began the inning, and the four runs came in to score on three hits with two outs.  Into the middle of the fourth, NIU led 5-1.

They kept piling on in the fifth, scoring four more on five hits, extending the lead to 9-1 into the bottom of the fifth.

Eastern began to make the comeback in the fifth, tightening the gap with four runs of their own.  Redshirt junior Marquise Gill (Paw Paw, Mich.-Paw Paw) led off with a single, followed by a base hit up the middle from sophomore David Lett (Farmington Hills, Mich.-North Farmington).  After a fielder's choice loaded the bags, Williams knocked in a pair more on a single to left.

Later in the inning after a double steal, junior John Montgomery (Anaheim Hills, Calif.-JSerra) plated a run on a bloop single, and this was immediately followed by a line drive RBI single to right from redshirt junior Michael Mioduszewski (Dexter, Mich.-Dexter), completing the four-run frame and making the score 9-5 into the sixth.

After four perfect innings from Shul in the sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth, the score remained 9-5 into the final turn at bat for EMU.

The Eagles got the lead off man on with a single and another on a hit by pitch with just one out.  The next two batters grounded out though, sealing the 9-5 defeat.

Eastern returns to the field tomorrow for game two of the weekend series. First pitch from Oestrike is set for 3 p.m.
