YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) –
The Eastern Michigan University baseball team clinched the weekend series with a win over Central Michigan University with a 3-0 shutout, Saturday, April 30 at Oestrike Stadium.  It was the Eagles' (17-22, 8-6 MAC) fourth straight win and second shutout in three games.

The four game winning streak marks the first four game streak for the Eagles since March 9-15, 2014.  It was also EMU's fourth shutout of the season, making it the most shutouts since 2007, when Eagles also blanked opponents four times.

The star of the afternoon was senior starting pitcher Augie Gallardo (Hemet, Calif.-Hemet (Mt. San Jacinto College)) who had a career day going seven innings and striking out a career-best 10 batters while only giving up one hit.  It was the most strikeouts for an Eagle pitcher since Ryan Lavioe had 11 against Western Michigan in 2012.  The veteran now has a team-high 55 strikeouts on the year.

Entering in relief, junior Matthew Beaton (Guelph, Ontario-Bishop Macdonnell Catholic) earned his third save of the season after going the final two innings, only allowing one hit.  It was the fifth save of his career.

Offensively, EMU mustered eight hits on the day.  The difference on the scoreboard came via a home run from junior Jeremy Stidham (Colorado Springs, Colo.-Sand Creek (Colby C.C.)); a two-run shot that broke the scoreless tie in the sixth.  He finished 2-for-4 in the game, with his sixth round-tripper of the season.  Senior Austin Wilson (Valrico, Fla.-Bloomingdale Sr.) extended his hitting streak to six games with a 2-for-3 day, including a walk.  He has three multi-hit games in that span.

The Eagles also swiped three bases in the game, putting their season total up to an even 100.

Both starting pitchers sailed through the first three innings, with only the Eagles collecting a pair of hits.  Gallardo only needed 25 pitches to get through the first three frames.  He yielded his first hit in the fourth on a weak grounder to second base, but kept the shutout in tact through five innings, striking out six batters.

He got a pair of K's in the sixth, totaling eight on the afternoon, and tying a career-high.  Despite that the score remained 0-0 into the bottom of the sixth.  The Eagles finally broke through in the sixth with a big-time two-run home run from Stidham, a no-doubter to left field, giving EMU the first runs of the game, and a 2-0 lead.

Gallardo remained in the game into the seventh and continued to mow down Chippewa hitters, striking out another pair to get his total to 10 on the day.  He exited in the eighth after going over the 100-pitch mark, being relieved for Beaton.  The junior ran into some trouble, putting runners on first and second with just one out, but a 6-4-3 double play ended the threat in the top of the eighth.

Eastern got an insurance run in the eighth on a throwing error on a double steal.  With runners breaking from first and second, the CMU throw to third sailed into left field, scoring the runner and giving EMU the 3-0 lead.

With the three-run cushion, Beaton went back to work in the ninth, shutting down the Chips with a one-two-three inning, and closing out the 3-0 victory.

Eastern now goes for the sweep tomorrow, May 1, with the final game of the weekend series against CMU.  First pitch from Oestrike Stadium is set for 1 p.m.
