Rowing Announces Six More Signings for 2016-17 Season

The newest Eagles join six signed last December
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University rowing team and Head Coach Kemp Savage announced six more signings for the 2016-17 recruiting class, Friday, April 29. The program will bring in six new faces to join six others who were signed during the early signing period, December 1.
The six newest signees are Alivia Demeuse (Clarklake, Mich.-Hanover-Horton), Amanda Flora (Greenfield, Ind.-Greenfield Central), Courtney Haynes (Marion, Ind.-Eastbrook), Kayla Henneman (Trenton, Mich.-Trenton), Lauren Magnuson (Saint Joseph, Mich.-Saint Joseph), and Karson Mahaney (Troy, Ohio-Miami East).
The six will join Haley Dutton (West Salem, Wis.-West Salem), Karissa Fald (Carvel, Alberta-Memorial Composite), MacKenzie Geisler (Mount Horeb, Wis.-Mount Horeb), Taylor Heard (Massillon, Ohio-Northwest Local Schools), Ashly Matzek (Ellsworth, Wis.-Ellsworth), and Hannah Taylor (Brooklyn, Mich.-Columbia Central), who were welcomed into the program in December.
Demeuse is the first of three Michiganders in the class, coming to Eastern from Clarklake. She lettered in volleyball, basketball, and track as a Comet at Hanover-Horton High School. She was twice named honorable mention All-Conference in volleyball, and was a conference champion as well. Demuse was also honorable mention All-Conference in basketball. She plans on majoring in nursing to become a nurse practitioner.
Flora is one of two recruits from Indiana, coming to Ypsi from Greenfield. She earned a total of nine letters as a Cougar at Greenfield Central High School, playing basketball, while also running cross country and track & field. Flora was a member of a conference, sectional and county championship team, which also set a school record for most wins in a season. In track, her 4x100m relay team were state qualifiers, and her team set the school record in the event as well. Flora plans on majoring in athletic training in hopes of being a physical therapist for a pro football team.
Haynes is the second Indiana native to join the class, hailing from Marian. She was a three-sport athlete at Eastbrook High School as a Panther, playing basketball, volleyball and running track. On the court, she lettered three times and was named First Team All-Conference and All-County, as well as honorable mention All-State as a senior. She was also an Indiana Elite North All-Star. Her team was conference and county champions, in addition to state sectional champions. Elsewhere, she was also named All-Conference in volleyball. Haynes plans on majoring in accounting/business at EMU.
Henneman, the second local product in the class, comes to Eastern from Trenton High School, where she was both a rower and coxswain. As a rower her girls senior eight took second place at the Wy-Hi race. She also coxed the boys novice four to a first place finish at the Salt Spring Sprints. Henneman will major in marketing at EMU, with plans to be an event planner or advertising sales agent.
Magnuson, the third Michigan recruit, will join the Green and White from Saint Joseph. Joining the program as a sophomore, she is transferring from Mississippi State University. She lettered in basketball, golf and soccer as a Bear at Saint Joseph High School. She was a center/forward on her high school basketball team. Magnuson plans on majoring in exercise science to become a sports medicine physician.
The final recruit is the only one not from Michigan or Indiana, as Mahaney hails from Troy, Ohio. She lettered 11 times in volleyball, basketball, and track as a Viking at Miami East High School. Her volleyball team won a state title in 2012, while her track squad were four-time conference champions, four-time district champions and four-time regional qualifiers, earning runner-up titles three years and a regional title in 2012. Individually, she was named most improved volleyball player twice, as well as most valuable field event athlete in 2014. She will also major in exercise science at EMU with hopes of being a physical therapist.
The 2016 rowing season continues this weekend with the MACRA Regatta in Cincinnati, Ohio. The all-day event will take place Sunday, May 1.
