Men's Track and Field Posts Strong Opening to Weekend

The Eagles competed in two meets to begin their three days of competition

INDIANOLA, Iowa / DES MOINES, Iowa (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team took part in a pair of competitions yesterday, April 28. The Eagles participated in both the Kip Janvrin Open, as well as the Drake Relays.
Redshirt senior Keith Williams (Sherman, Ill. – Williamsville) and redshirt junior Anthony Jones (Sandusky, Ohio – Sandusky) both took part in the hammer throw at the Kip Janvrin Open. Williams narrowly edged out Jones to take home the gold, with the redshirt senior posting a mark of 58.38 meters/ 191 feet 6-inches. Jones, who nabbed the silver, finished with a throw of 57.32 meters/ 188 feet 1-inch.
Moving to the Drake Relays, the Eagles took part in four events throughout their first day of competition. Beginning with the 5000m run, redshirt sophomore Lahsene Bouchikhi (Antwerp, Belgium – Stedelijk Lyceum Paardenmarkt Luchthaven) finished 10th in the talented field of runners, turning in a personal-best time of 14:14.36. In the 10000m run, fellow redshirt sophomore John Knox (Gloversville, N.Y. – Gloversville) took home the bronze for the Green and White, turning in a time of 30:09.79. Also running for EMU was redshirt sophomore Abel Flores (Defiance, Ohio – Defiance), clocking in at 31:29.00, which was a career-best time.
Finally, EMU took home their second top-three finish of the day in the 4x1600m relay. The group of redshirt sophomores Nick Raymond (Erie, Mich. – Mason) and Hlynur Andresson (Vestmannaeyjar, Iceland – Mountain Ridge), sophomore Csaba Matko (Racalmas, Hungary – Szechenyi Istvan Gimnazium), and redshirt junior Willy Fink (Maumee, Ohio – Maumee) claimed the silver, barely being edged out by the team from Wisconsin by just one second. The group crossed the finish line in 16:40.46 to beat out Nebraska by less than half a second.
