YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) –
The Eastern Michigan University baseball team captured its third straight victory with a commanding 6-1 defeat of Mid-American Conference rival Central Michigan University Friday night, April 29, at Oestrike Stadium.  The victory pushed EMU's MAC record back to above .500 at 7-6.

The Eagles (16-22) got it done on both sides of the field, clubbing 12 hits while only giving up the one run on defense.  The pitchers also combined to strike out out nine hitters.

Redshirt junior Michael Mioduszewski (Dexter, Mich.-Dexter) led EMU offensively with his second three-hit game of the season.  The leftfielder went 3-for-4 with a double and his sixth home run of the season, finishing a triple shy of the cycle.  Senior Mitchell McGeein (Calgary, Alberta-Vauxhall) clubbed his team-leading eighth home run of the season, which was also the 27th of his career, putting him in a tie for eighth on the all-time list.

On the mound, senior Michael Marsinek (Streetsboro, Ohio-Walsh Jesuit) got his second start of the season and made the most of it.  The veteran went a career-high six inning, striking out five batters, tying his career-high.  In relief, junior Sam Delaplane (San Jose, Calif.-Leigh) tossed the final three, striking out four, and earning his third save of the season.  It was his 10th save for his career, putting him in a tie for fifth all-time.

McGeein got the scoring started with a boom with a line-drive solo home run to left field, putting EMU ahead 1-0 after one inning.  The Eagles got another in the second on an unearned run.  With runners on second and third, CMU (11-31, 5-8 MAC) attempted a pickoff to second but the throw was low, allowing the runner to score from third.

On the mound, Marsinek threw three quick innings without giving up a run, keeping EMU ahead 2-0 into the fourth.  An Eagle miscue allowed a run to score in the top of the fourth though, when a fielding error scored a runner that was on third, tightening the score to 2-1.

The Eagles got the run back immediately in the bottom of the fourth with a run on a pair of hits.  Mioduszewski led off with a line-drive single, and after a steal of second, he was plated by another single, this time from junior John Montgomery (Anaheim Hills, Calif.-JSerra), giving EMU the two-run lead back, 3-1.  On the bump, Marsinek bounced back in the fifth, striking out a pair and keeping the advantage.

Another home run for the Eagles extended the lead in the sixth, this time a two-run shot.  After a lead-off double from sophomore Brennan Williams (Commerce Township, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern), Mioduszewski scorched a fly ball to left field, extending the lead to 5-1 after six innings.  Marsinek exited before the sixth, ending his night with a career-high six innings and five strikeouts.

The Chippewas almost capitalized in the top of the seventh, loading the bases up on a single, a hit batter, and a walk.  This summoned Delaplane from the bullpen, and he got the next three hitters to strikeout, fly out and strikeout, getting out of the jam, and sending the game to the stretch.

Delaplane cruised through the eighth, going one-two-three with a strikeout.  The Eagles added some insurance in the bottom half with two outs.  Senior Austin Wilson (Valrico, Fla.-Bloomingdale Sr.) knocked a single, his second hit of the game.  After a steal, junior Jeremy Stidham (Colorado Springs, Colo.-Sand Creek (Colby C.C.)) smacked one through the middle, scoring Wilson and giving EMU a 6-1 cushion going to the ninth.

Despite giving up his first hit in the ninth, Delaplane locked down the Chippewas, sealing the 6-1 EMU victory, and completing his third save of the season.

The Eagles go for the series win tomorrow, April 30, with game two of the series versus CMU.  First pitch from Oestrike is set for 3 p.m.
