Softball Stunned in Walk-Off Loss to Michigan State

Sophomore Brandice Olmos belted her first homer of the season in the loss
EAST LANSING, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – A seventh inning rally stunned the Eastern Michigan University softball team at Secchia Stadium Wednesday, April 27, as Michigan State University came back to win, 3-2, on a walk-off single. The Eagles (18-27, 8-9 MAC) held a two-run lead entering the bottom of the seventh, but the Spartans (23-25, 4-13 B1G) plated three to hand EMU its fourth straight loss.
Making her first start in the circle since March 29, sophomore Trisha Trujillo (Whittier, Calif.-California) was lights out. Trujillo tossed six-plus innings, striking out two while allowing just six hits. The Whittier, Calif. product did not allow an earned run through six frames as the Spartans did not plate a run until the seventh. Junior Abbie Minsker (Howell, Mich.-Hartland) earned the loss, entering the game in relief in the seventh.
Three different Eagles picked up hits, as EMU was outhit 9-3 in the contest. Sophomore Brandice Olmos (Riverside, Calif.-Grand Terrace) went 1-for-2 with a home run while freshman Olivia Logan (Riverview, Mich.-Riverview) also turned in a 1-for-2 effort with an RBI. Rounding out EMU's offense was senior Abi Clark (Clinton, Mich.-Clinton) who finished the day 1-for-3.
Olmos and Haley Hostetler (New Haven, Ind.-Woodlan) drew back-to-back walks with one out in the second. Fellow sophomore, Angel Schilke (Saline, Mich.-Saline) replaced Olmos at first. Promptly swiping second, Schilke stole third as Hostetler drew the walk to put runners on the corners for Logan. Logan hit a hard grounder back to the circle, leading to a rundown for the Eagles. Forcing the Spartans to work for the out, Schilke eventually slid home safely to give EMU the lead, 1-0. Logan scooted into second on the play and Hostetler stood on third, but back-to-back strikeouts ended the Eagles' threat.
Michigan State rallied in the third, but came up empty as Trujillo and the Eagles hung tough. MSU's leadoff batter was plunked and advanced to second on a single before a sacrifice bunt put runners on second and third with one out. After Logan snagged a liner at first, a two-out walk loaded the bases for the Spartans. Trujillo did not waver under pressure however, returning to the rubber and striking out MSU's number five hitter to escape the jam and maintain EMU's one-run edge.
Olmos doubled the Eagles lead in the fourth, clubbing a solo shot well over the left field fence for her first round-tripper of the season. Hostetler kept the rally going, drawing her second free pass of the afternoon while Logan followed with a single to put runners on the corners for junior Taylor Wagner (Marshalltown, Iowa-Marshalltown). Wagner ripped a liner towards the left-center gap but a stout defensive play by MSU's shortstop robbed the Eagles' backstop of an RBI and a hit before doubling up Logan at first to end Eastern's half of the fourth.
A leadoff single for MSU spelled trouble for the Eagles in the sixth, but Hostetler flashed her glove at shortstop to send the game to the seventh. Hostetler caught a sinking liner and fired to first, doubling up the runner to end the inning and send Eastern Michigan to the bat rack with a 2-0 advantage.
EMU went down in order in the seventh despite a one-out walk by Wagner, bringing Michigan State to the plate for its final at bats. The Spartans broke the frame open with a leadoff double to the fence in left center and a bunt single, putting runners on first and third with no outs, ending Trujillo's day. Minkser entered the circle in relief, giving up an RBI single to the first batter she faced. After a hit by pitch loaded the bases, back-to-back RBI knocks gave MSU the walk-off win, 3-2.
The showdown with the Spartans marked the final non-conference game of the season for the Eagles. Now, EMU turns its attention to Mid-American Conference play in Mount Pleasant, Mich., April 29-30, against Central Michigan University. The three-game set against the Chippewas begins Friday, April 29, at 3 p.m.
