NOBLESVILLE, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – Despite firing the second lowest round in program-history 290, the Eastern Michigan University women's golf team was only able to move up two spots to finish in fourth-place at the 2016 Mid-American Conference Championship with a three-day cumulative score of 896 (296-310-290). Kent State University captured the tournament title, finishing at four-over par 868 (294-285-289) on the par-72, 6,257 yard Purgatory Golf Club course.
Overall it was a very successful weekend for the Eagles, as EMU's 54-hole score shattered the program's previous MAC Championship low by 29 strokes which was set in 2003 at Walden Ponds in Hamilton, Ohio, with a 925 (309-317-299). Additionally, the team's 290 was the lowest 18-hole mark in the team's 57 all-time rounds in MAC Tournament play. Altogether, the three-round tally is eighth best in school history and the single-day score is tied for second all-time in EMU laurels.
One of the best seasons in program history, the Eagles posted the lowest 18-hole average in program history at 304.04. The tally finished 1.7 strokes ahead of the 2011-12 squad's previous standard of 305.74. Overall, Eastern Michigan finished in the top-five at six different tournaments this season, including a second-place finish in the The Preview, which has also hosted by EMU at Purgatory in the fall.
The Golden Flashes made history at the tournament, as KSU captured its 18th-consecutive league championship. With the victory, the squad surpassed the EMU's men's swimming and diving team (1980-96) for the longest consecutive championship streak in MAC history.
EMU junior Kelsey Murphy (Plymouth, Mich.-Plymouth), who entered the day in a tie for fifth, finished in 13th-place with a 222 (71-73-78). The top-15 showing was the 16th of her career as she also collected Second Team All-MAC honors. In total, the Plymouth, Mich. native led the team with an average of 74.44, the lowest in school history.
With near perfect conditions with temperatures nearing 80 degrees, the University of Akron's Danielle Nicholsonwon individual medalist honors. The freshman recorded a 211 (69-71-71) to finish ahead of Toledo's Pimchanok Kawil (73-69-71). Ohio's Hailey Hrynewich made a late charge with a five-under 67 on Sunday to finish third.
Kent State entered the day with a three-stroke lead and gradually grew its advantage over the University of Toledo. The four-stroke differential was the smallest in the 18-year history of the championship, bettering the previous low of 10 between KSU and EMU just last year. The Golden Flashes were followed by Toledo (872) and Ohio (882). While Eastern Michigan (896), Western Michigan (899), Akron (905), Northern Illinois (905), Bowling Green (913) and Central Michigan (920) rounded out the team standings.
Toledo's Nicole Hollingsworth was named MAC Coach of the Year and the Golden Flashes' Taylor Kim earned MAC Golfer of the Year. The Zips' Nicholsonwas named MAC Freshman of the Year and Lauren McKinzie of Ohio earned MAC Sportswoman of the Year accolades.
For the tournament, three of the five Eagles ranked in the top 15, including freshman Penelope Guilleux (Saint Maur Des Fosse, France-Arsonval) who finished tied for 15th with a 225 (76-79-70). Guilleux posted the lowest round of her young career with five birdies on the day for her first top 15 showing. Sophomore Thelma Beck (Baden, France-Lycee Sainte Anne) also posted a 225 (75-79-71) after going three-under after the turn. Seniors Karyn Lee Ping (Brampton, Ontario-St. Augustine Secondary School) rounded out her collegiate career with an even-par 72 for a 228 (77-79-72), while fellow senior Lauren Stephens (Dublin, Ohio-Coffman) turned in a 234 (74-83-77).
Head Coach Pina Gentile and the rest of the Eagles will now await the announcement of the teams and individuals that will participate in the NCAA Regional Championships. That announcement will be made April 25 on national television via Golf Channel. The four regional sites include Stanford Golf Course (Stanford University); Traditions Club (Texas A&M University); University Club (LSU); and Shoal Creek Club (University of Alabama).
