NOBLESVILLE, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – With 18 holes in the books at the 2016 Mid-American Conference Championship, the Eastern Michigan University women's golf team sits in fifth-place after shooting a 296. The day began under overcast conditions before the sun broke though and players enjoyed sunshine and temperatures in the mid-60s. All that lasted until around 2 p.m., however, when a small storm cell delayed play for approximately an hour after which the players finished their remaining holes. The University of Toledo leads the way after posting a one-over 289 on the par-72, 6,186-yard Purgatory Golf Club course.
The Rockets hold a four-stroke lead heading into day two, that total includes holding down four of the tournament's top 10 slots. Western Michigan is in second-place with a score of 293, followed by seventeen-time defending MAC champion Kent State (294), Bowling Green (295), EMU (296), Akron (300), Ohio(301), Northern Illinois (310), Ball State (311) and Central Michigan (317).
Individually, Akron's Danielle Nicholson and Toledo's Manisa Isavas hold down the top-spot on the leaderboard with an opening round 69. The total is tied for the lowest single-round in championship, a mark that has been accomplished eight other times in the past 17 seasons.
Junior Kelsey Murphy (Plymouth, Mich.-Plymouth) paced the EMU attack with a 71 for a two-way tie for third. It marked the first time in school history that an EMU player was under par in the MAC's opening round. Senior Lauren Stephens (Dublin, Ohio-Coffman) posted the fourth lowest round of her season with a 74 to tie for 13th.
Sophomore Thelma Beck (Baden, France-Lycee Sainte Anne) opened with a 75 for 19th-place while Penelope Guilleux (Saint Maur Des Fosse, France-Arsonval) fired a 76 for 29th. Rounding out the lineup, senior Karyn Lee Ping (Brampton, Ontario-St. Augustine Secondary School) is tied for 33rd after an open-round 77.
The second round of the 2016 MAC Women's Golf Championship will get underway at 8 a.m. Saturday, April 23, with the final round scheduled for Sunday, April 24, at 8 a.m. For live scoring, visit golfstat.com.
