The Eagles suffered their second straight MAC setback
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- Eastern Michigan University's tennis team fell on Sunday, March 27, to the University at Buffalo, in its second match of the Mid-American Conference's opening weekend. The Eagles (3-12, 0-2 MAC) dropped their second-straight match in MAC play, after EMU was unable to secure the doubles point, the Bulls took four of the singles matches.
In doubles action, the Green and White led in the No. 1 match as Klara Supejova and Andrea Martinovska were looking for their third-straight victory, however the match went unfinished when the Eagles dropped their matches at the No. 2 and 3 spots, falling 6-4 and 6-2.
Eastern Michigan saw two victories in a pair of singles matches. One of the wins came by way of retirement, as UB's Margarita Kotok was leading 1-0 in the first set but was unable to finish, giving Ani Gogvadze her first win of the 2016 MAC campaign. Freshman Marie Mayerova picked up her first collegiate conference win versus Buffalo. The Krmelin, Czech Republic native defeated Marie Losado, 6-2, 6-2, in the No. 5 singles position for her first MAC victory. Unfortunately, the EMU squad fell in each of its other four singles matches but not without a fight. Both Martinovska and Supejova took their opponents to three sets but came up on the wrong side of the decision. Alejandro Barcelo Almoyna appeared in just her third match of the dual season versus the Bulls. Barcelo fell, 6-2, 7-6, at the No. 6 singles position.
"We fought and played much better tennis today," remarked Head Coach Ryan Ray. "All I can ask for is this. We still need to get better in tiebreaks and third set matches. This was the difference in the match today. Credit to Buffalo for capitalizing."
The Green and White will return to the court Sunday, April 3, when the Eagles will host Ball State University for a MAC matchup at 1 p.m. The match is slated to be played at the Wasik Tennis Complex, however if the weather does not cooperate, the dual will be moved to the Chippewa Racquet Club.
