Two Eagles Qualify to NCAA Indoor Championships

A pair of men's track and field athletes will head to Birmingham, Ala. to vie for a national title
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The National Collegiate Athletic Association announced yesterday, March 1, that redshirt juniors Willy Fink (Maumee, Ohio - Maumee) and Anthony Jones (Sandusky, Ohio - Sandusky) of the Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team were selected to attend the NCAA Indoor Championships, March 11-12.The duo will be making the trek south to Birmingham, Ala. to vie for a national title in their respective events.
Starting off, Fink was selected to run in the 3000m, qualifying with the seventh-best time nationally. Fink's time of 7:50.57 came at the Camel City Invitational, Jan. 29. The redshirt junior most recently won both the 3000m and the 5000m at the Mid-American Conference Indoor Championships this past weekend, Feb. 26-27, earning First Team All-MAC and Most Valuable Performer honors in the process. This marks the first time that the Maumee, Ohio native was selected to participate in the Indoor Championships, after qualifying for outdoors last season.
Also qualifying to the championship for the second-straight season was Jones in the weight throw. Jones, who holds the EMU record in the event, qualified with the ninth-best mark in the nation. His throw of 21.84 meters/ 71 feet 8-inches came at the Findlay Open & Elite Throws Competition, Feb. 12. At the MAC Championships, the Sandusky, Ohio native took the weight throw title with a toss of 21.48 meters/ 70 feet 5.75-inches. He also nabbed First Team All-MAC and Most Outstanding Field Performer accolades for his performance at the conference meet.
Action from Birmingham, Ala. is slated to begin Friday, March 11, at 5 p.m. with the men's weight throw. Fink will take part in the 3000m on Saturday, March 12, at 6:10 p.m.
