SOUTH BEND, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team finished up the first day of the Meyo invitational today, Feb. 5. The team was led by a trio of top-10 finishes in the long jump, pole vault, and DMR.
The Eagles got off to a solid start in the 60m dash prelims, as both freshman Jessica Harris (Slidell, La. – Slidell) and senior Morgan Yeadon (Indianapolis, Ind. – Pike) turned in career-bests. Harris clocked in at 7.63, which was good for 20th, while Yeadon was just behind her, crossing the finish line in 7.67. The duo also ran in the 200m dash, and nabbed a pair of career-bests there as well. This time, Yeadon was the top EMU finisher, taking 19th with a time of 24.76.
Junior Dayna Hurd (Carson, Calif – Carson) was the lone Green and White competitor in the 600m, nabbing 24th with a time of 1:37.87. Redshirt freshman Allie Knoll (Warren, Mich. – Warren Mott) turned in a career-best in the 5000m, clocking in at 18:35.03. Moving to the 60m hurdles, senior Maya Carter (Racine, Wis. – Case) and sophomore Tifani Byrd (Toms River, N.J. – Toms River North) were very close throughout the event, as Carter barely edged her teammate, finishing in 8.98 while Byrd finished with a time of 8.99.
The distance medley group of sophomore Natalie Cizmas (Clinton Twp., Mich. – Chippewa Valley), senior Iesha Hardiman (Santa Clara, Calif. – Adrian Wilcox), and sophomores Claire Mesa (Rockford, Ill. – Rockford Lutheran) and Danielle Bentzley (Birmingham, Mich. – Seaholm) turned in a 10th-place performance, clocking in at 11:52.04. Sophomore Dace Dreimane (Ventspils, Latvia – Ventspils Gymnasium No. 1) turned in a ninth-place performance in the long jump, finishing with a mark of 5.63 meters/ 18 feet 5.75-inches.
The pole vault saw more success for the Eagles, as junior Janina Pollatz (Grandville, Mich. – Grand Rapids Christian) finished seventh, posting a vault of 3.70 meters/ 12 feet 1.5-inches. Rounding out the day was the weight throw, in which freshman Jada Taylor (Neptune, N.J. – Neptune) finished with a throw of 13.80 meters/ 45 feet 3.50-inches.
The Eagles return to action tomorrow, with day two of the Meyo Invite getting underway at 9:45 a.m. The day will start with the 3000m, and conclude with the 4x400m relay at 3:45 p.m.
