Anthony Abro and Gage Hutchison recorded wins in the loss

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team fell to in-state rival, Central Michigan University (7-4, 4-1), on the road, Feb. 5. Redshirt senior Anthony Abro (Canton, Mich.-Canton) and redshirt freshman Gage Hutchison (Buchanan, Mich. Buchanan) recorded wins for the Eagles (7-7, 2-5) in the, 22-12,loss to No. 23 CMU.

The dual started at 184 with redshirt freshman Derek Hillman (Woodhaven, Mich-Woodhaven-Brownstown) who was matched up with No. 29 Jordan Ellingwood. Two early takedowns had him trailing 4-1 after one, before eventually falling 10-2.

Abro stepped onto the mat next, taking on Jackson Lewis at 197. A quiet first period left the two grapplers scoreless heading into the second. Lewis elected to begin in the down position and earned an escape to carry a 1-0 lead into the final period. A pair of escapes combined with a stalling point against Lewis leveled the score at three to force overtime where Abro scrambled for the, 5-3,win.

Turning to the heavyweight bout, Hutchison scored a reversal in the third period to take a 2-1 lead in the match. Holding off any attempt to free by Newton Smerchek, Hutchison racked up riding time before earning the 3-1 victory.

CMU forfeited at 125, pushing the team score to 12-4 in favor of the Green and White.

The Chippewas won the next six bouts in route to a 22-12 win despite some tight matches along the way. Of the final six matches, all but one were decided by two points or less.

At 133, junior Shayne Wireman (Lansing, Mich.-Holt) could not overcome CMU's early lead, falling by decision, 3-1.

Eastern came up on the wrong side of another one-point decision at 141, as redshirt sophomore Kyle Springer (New Boston, Mich.-Davenport Assumption) fell 4-3. Battling 14th-ranked Zach Horan, Springer scored an early takedown to carry a 2-1 lead into the second period. Horan returned the favor in the second, scoring a takedown of his own before Springer pulled within one on an escape in the third.

After EMU dropped matches at 149 and 157, redshirt freshman Dakota Juarez (Grand Haven, Mich.-Grand Haven) looked to turn the tide against former high school rival, Jordan Atienza. Juarez ruled the third period, registering two takes down to even the score at six but a riding time point gave Atienza the 7-6 decision.

With one bout to go, the Eagles trailed 19-12. Another tight match ended in favor of the home team as a third period takedown left junior No. 32Jacob Davis (North Ridgeville, Ohio-St. Edward) with a 3-2 loss.

Eastern continues the season on the road, Feb. 14, against Old Dominion. The Eagles dual with ODU is slated to begin at Noon in Norfolk, Va.
