FULL RESULTS

EDINBORO, Pa. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team placed three of its wrestlers in the top-six at the Edinboro Open, Saturday, Feb. 6.  The top finisher for EMU was freshman Zac Carson (Akron, Ohio-Uniontown Lake), who took second place at the 157 lbs. weight class.

Facing a field that included some of the top wrestling programs in the country, EMU sent six of its grapplers onto the mats throughout the day.  In total, EMU racked up 23 wins.

For Carson, it was his second straight second-place effort at an open after taking second at the Purple Raider Open, Jan. 17.  His day began with a 9-4 decision over Nate Russell of Pittsburgh.  He followed that up with a fall in 1:24 over Dillon Ellsworth of Michigan State.  It was Carson's fifth fall of the season, and also his quickest.

In the Round of 16, Carson defeated Jake Deutschlander of Arizona State by a 13-7 decision to advance into the quarterfinals.  There, he knocked off the No. 3 ranked grappler, Aaron Mckinney of Lock Haven by a 7-5 decision, vaulting him into the semis.  In the semifinal, Carson won his fifth straight match by a tight 6-5 decision.  In the finals match, Carson matched up with another Spartan, Nicholas Trimble.  For the first and only time on the day, Carson fell by an 11-5 decision to finish in second place.

The next highest placer for the Eagles was freshman J.J. Wolfe (Dakota, Ill.-Dakota) at 149 lbs.  The true freshman took fifth place, good for his third top-six open performance this season.  He got his tournament started by recording a fall in just 1:10.  In his Round of 16 match, Wolfe was downed by the No. 3 ranked wrestler in the tournament to drop into the consolation rounds.

Wolfe made the most of the consolation rounds though, rattling off five straight victories.  In the first consolation match, Wolfe notched an 8-0 major decision over No. 4 tournament ranked Patrick Duggan of Lock Haven.  Next up, Wolfe completed his second pin on the day, this time in 2:37, to get to the consolation round of four.  Wolfe now has five pins on the season.

After advancing to the consolation semis on a medical forfeit, Wolfe got to the fifth place match with a 9-4 decision over Kyle Krasavage of Hofstra.  In his final bout fo the day, Wolfe ended it on a high note with a commanding 7-2 decision over No. 6 ranked tournament wrestler Josh Maruca of Arizona State.

The third Eagle to place at Edinboro was redshirt senior Michael Shaw (Allegan, Mich.-Allegan), who was wrestling in the same class as Carson at 157 lbs.  Shaw faced early adversity, falling in his first bout 5-0.  The veteran recovered nicely though, recording a major decision and two falls to get to the consolation round of four.  After back-to-back decision wins for Shaw, he found himself in the fifth place match.  There, he dropped his bout to Mckinney of Lock Haven to finish in sixth on the day.

The other three Eagles to suit up on Saturday were freshman Noah Gonser (Grand Blanc, Mich.-Grand Blanc) at 133 lbs., Sa'Derian Perry (Lakeland, Fla.-Lake Gibson) at 141 lbs., and redshirt junior Mitchell Malott (Saginaw, Mich.-Swan Valley) at 174 lbs.  Gonser nabbed a pair of wins on the day, including one by 14-1 major decision.

Perry won his first three matches in the tournament, one by a 15-2 major decision, the other two by decision to get to the quarterfinals.  His Round of 16 match was over No. 3 ranked tournament wrestler A.C. Headlee of North Carolina.  After the early success, Perry would go on to fall in next two bouts.

Finally, Malott won to start his day, getting his first pin of the season in just 1:29.  After falling in sudden victory in the Round of 16, he grabbed a win in the first consolation bout before bowing out.

The Eagles are back in action this Sunday when they take part in their final dual of the regular season against Old Dominion, Feb. 14.  The action from Norfolk, Va. is set to begin at Noon.
