SOUTH BEND, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team opened the annual Meyo Invitational today, Feb. 5. The squad had a solid day overall, with the distance medley group nabbing a third-place finish.
In the 60m dash prelims, freshman Aitor Ekobo (Madrid, Spain – Jose Luis Lopez Aranguren Secondary School) managed to qualify for the finals, clocking in at 6.88, which was good for seventh. His mark was also a new personal best. Rounding out the Eagles in the event was senior Wayne Blanchard (Toledo, Ohio – St. Francis De Sales) and freshman Nicholas Herbert (Portage, Mich. – Portage Northern), who took 20th and 39th, respectively.
The Green and White had three runners in the 200m dash, with sophomore Mark Cooke (Edison, N.J. – John P. Stevens) leading the way and crossing the finish line in 22.13. Cooke managed to place 21st, while Ekobo and redshirt junior Nick James (Troy, Ohio – Troy) nabbed 28th and 38th. Moving to the 5000m run, redshirt sophomore John Knox (Gloversville, N.Y. – Gloversville) took 14th in 14:36.81. Additionally, fellow redshirt sophomore Abel Flores (Defiance, Ohio – Defiance) finished 22nd with a time of 14:50.42.
In the 60m hurdles prelims, senior Bryce Lindsey (New Middletown, Ohio – Fairfield Senior) turned in a solid performance, clocking in at 8.15, which qualified him to the finals. Also running was freshman Frank Douglas (Mansfield, Ohio – Madison Comprehensive), who finished in 8.51. The highlight of the day came with the distance medley relay, as the group of sophomore Csaba Matko (Racalmas, Hungary – Szechenyi Istvan Gimnazium), senior Jeff Elam (Latrobe, Pa. – Greater Latrobe Senior), senior Scott Bradley (Battle Creek, Mich. – Lakeview), and graduate student Joshua Sabo (Akron, Ohio – Revere) took home bronze with a time of 9:59.48, just five seconds off the first-place finishers from DePaul.
Herbert paced the Eagles in the long jump, finishing ninth with a mark of 7.08 meters/ 23 feet 2.75-inches, which was a personal-best. Also competing in the event was freshman Cameron Hart (Columbus, Ohio – Bishop Hartley) and redshirt junior Zach Waldron (Grand Rapids, Mich. – Northview), finishing 19th and 20th, respectively. Finishing with the weight throw, redshirt junior Anthony Jones (Sandusky, Ohio – Sandusky) just missed a podium finish, as he took fourth with a mark of 20.86 meters/ 68 feet 5.25-inches. Also finishing in the top-15 was redshirt senior Keith Williams (Sherman, Ill. – Williamsville) in 13th with a throw of 18.87 meters/ 61 feet 11-inches.
