The Eagles were able to take three singles matches but dropped the doubles point
BOCA RATON, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) -- Eastern Michigan University's tennis team continued its mid-winter trip to the Sunshine State Thursday, Feb. 25, when it traveled to Boca Raton, Fla. to square off with Florida Atlantic University in a single dual match. The Eagles (2-9) fell, 4-3, as the Owls took the doubles point and a trio of singles matches.
Beginning in doubles play, the Eagles saw their No. 2 squad of Ani Gogvadze and Marie Mayerova defeat FAU's Alexis Grenshaw and Cassie Pough, 6-4, however Andrea Martinovska and Klara Supejova dropped their No. 1 match, 6-3, to Lyndsey Boos and Ana Gutierrez. The doubles point was decided when the Owls' No. 3 squad of Jennifer Leib and Jazz Whittaker defeated Renu Sharma and Anna Veleva, 6-4.
Eastern Michigan fared better in singles action, taking away three wins. Supejova dispatched of Whittaker easily in the No. 1 singles position, 6-4, 7-5, while Veleva got revenge on Leib at No. 5, 6-0, 6-2. EMU's other victory came in a three-setter as Martinovska took the first set from Pough, 6-4, before dropping set two, 6-2. The Plzn, Czech Republic native came away with the victory, defeating Pough, 7-5, in the third set.
"Doubles was a critical point today," remarked Head Coach Ryan Ray. "We didn't do a great job playing in the windy conditions early. We need to get better, and I need to get us to that point. We will battle against FIU tomorrow, and look to improve."
