EMU spread nine hits among nine batters
EMERSON, Ga. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University baseball team finished the weekend in Georgia with a convincing 8-1 victory over the University of Nebraska-Omaha at the Perfect Game Complex. The win capped off a series win over the Mavericks (2-2), and a 3-1 overall weekend in the Peach State, marking EMU's best start since a 3-1 start to the 1994 season.
The Eagles used a balanced hitting attack and steady bullpen work to control the game. EMU finished with nine hits, with all nine spread out among the nine starting position players. Three players finished with multiple RBI games, including senior Jackson Martin (Listowel, Ontario-Listowel), who clubbed his first home run of the season, which was a two-run jack. Fellow senior Mitchell McGeein (Calgary Alberta, Vauxhall) and redshirt junior Michael Mioduszewski (Dexter, Mich.-Dexter) also drove home a pair of runners. Junior Jeremy Stidham (Colorado Springs, Colo.-Sand Creek (Colby C.C.)) logged the first triple of the season for EMU in his only hit of the day.
On the defensive side, senior Austin Wilson (Valrico, Fla.-Bloomingdale Sr.) made his first career start for the Eagles, earning the win after going four strong and striking out three. From there, the bullpen carried the team to victory, as four pitchers combined to go the final five innings. A majority of the work came from sophomore Brent Mattson (Canton, Mich.-Canton) and junior Matthew Beaton (Guelph, Ontario-Bishop Macdonnell Catholic), who both threw two innings in both of their season debuts. Both threw scoreless frames, and Mattson struck out one.
As was the case in the other two games EMU won this weekend, one big inning was the primary difference in the outcome. Today it was the bottom of the first, where the Eagles struck for four runs. Redshirt junior Marquise Gill (Paw Paw, Mich.-Paw Paw) led off with a single and promptly stole second. After a walk and fly out put runners on the corners, junior John Montgomery (Anaheim Hills, Calif.-JSerra) knocked in the first run with a single. A sacrifice fly plated another run before Martin's two-run shot put EMU up 4-0.
The score remained stagnant until the bottom of the fifth on a Mioduszewski single, which plated Montgomery after he walked and advanced on a wild pitch. A sacrifice fly in the sixth plated another run for EMU. UNO got it back in the seventh on an RBI single, putting the score at 6-1.
EMU squashed any attempt at a comeback though, shutting Omaha down the rest of the way, while also scoring two more insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth on a wild pitch and McGeein RBI single.
Eastern continues the season in the south as it makes the short jaunt down to Florida for a two-game mid-week set against the University of Florida. The first game in the series is set for a 7 p.m. first pitch, Tuesday, Feb. 23 at Alfred A. McKethan Stadium.
