EMU took game two, 8-0, after losing game one
EMERSON, Ga. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University baseball team followed up its monster performance yesterday by splitting a doubleheader Saturday, Feb. 20 at the Perfect Game Complex in Emerson, Ga. The Eagles fell to the University of Nebraska-Omaha, 2-1 in the opener, but saw the bats come back to life in an 8-0 win over NJIT.
Game One: Nebraska-Omaha 2, Eastern Michigan 1
Despite finishing even in the hits column, 8-8, the Eagles (2-1) were edged out by the Mavericks (1-1) in the runs column, evening the season series at one game apiece. In his EMU debut, freshman right-handed pitcher Davis Feldman (Warren, Mich.-Brother Rice) went five strong innings, allowing no earned runs and striking out three batters.
Sophomore left-handed pitcher Kyle Huckaby (Chandler, Ariz-Perry) took the hard luck loss for EMU after giving up the decisive run in two innings of work. He also struck out three. Also making his EMU debut was junior righty Kevin Shul (Albuquerque, N.M. - Albuquerque Academy (College of Southern Nevada)), who pitched a scoreless inning.
On the offensive side, four of the eight hits came off the bats of sophomore Brennan Williams (Commerce Township, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern) and senior Mitchell McGeein (Calgary, Alberta-Vauxhall), who both finished with 2-for-4 games. Williams had the lone RBI for Eastern. Recording the only extra base hits for EMU was redshirt junior Michael Mioduszewski (Dexter, Mich.-Dexter) and senior Austin Wilson (Valrico, Fla.-Bloomingdale Sr.), who both had doubles.
UNO put runs on the board in the first inning for the second straight game, scoring an unearned run following an Eastern error. The score sat 1-0 heading into the third before EMU got on the board in the top of the third. Drawing a lead-off walk, sophomore David Lett (Farmington Hills, Mich.-North Farmington) then stole second and advanced to third on a groundout. He would come in to score in the next at-bat when Williams drove him in.
At that point both pitchers settled in, keeping things scoreless going into the sixth. In the bottom frame, UNO turned a lead-off walk into the decisive run. The Mavericks blanked the Eagles the rest of the way, winning by one run.
Game Two: Eastern Michigan, 8 NJIT, 0
EMU got back on track in game two of the day, using 12 hits to rack up eight runs while shutting out NJIT (0-1), and only surrendering four hits themselves.
The two stars of the evening came on the mound, where senior RHP Augie Gallardo (Hemet, Calif.-Hemet (Mt. San Jacinto College)) earned the win by going five strong, allowing just two hits and striking out six. This was followed up by a four-inning save from freshman LHP Tyler Butzin (Dearborn, Mich.-John F. Kennedy) in his EMU debut. The rookie only surrendered two hits himself, while striking out five batters.
Not to be outdone on the offensive side, the 12 hits were split between 10 batters. Williams recorded his second two-hit effort of the day, going 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Redshirt-junior Marquise Gill (Paw Paw, Mich.-Paw Paw) also collected two hits, including a double, while also scoring two runs and stealing two bases.
A pair of freshman notched their first career hits, with Robert Iacobelli (Rochester Hills, Mich.-Brother Rice) and redshirt-freshman Alex Wolanski (Naperville, Ill.-Neuqua Valley) both notching singles in pinch-hit appearances.
EMU picked up the lead in the first inning and never looked back. After a Williams double, junior John Montgomery (Anaheim Hills, Calif-JSerra) doubled him in to take a 1-0 advantage in the first. The score remained that way until the third when Gill singled, stole second, advanced to third on a groundout and then scored on a McGeein single. After three innings, EMU was on top 2-0.
Then the floodgates opened for EMU in the top of the sixth where they broke things open with a six-run inning. A Mioduszewski double opened the frame, and he was promptly knocked in by a senior Jackson Martin (Listowel, Ontario-Listowel) single. Martin then stole two bags, setting him up at third. He was knocked in on a junior Jeremy Stidham (Colorado Springs, Colo.-Sand Creek (Colby C.C.)) RBI double, putting the score at 4-0.
The inning continued on with a hit-by-pitch and error, which set up Williams for a two-RBI single to make the total 6-0. After a double-steal and passed ball scored Gill, Williams came around on a sacrifice fly off the bat of McGeein.
From there the scoring was over for both teams, as the EMU pitchers cruised the rest of the way, securing the 8-0 shutout win.
Eastern now has one final game in Georgia, a rubber match with Omaha, Sunday, Feb. 21. The single game is set for a noon first pitch from the Perfect Game Complex.
