EMU finished with 20 hits
The Green and White (1-0) used a balanced offensive attack, totaling 20 hits on the day. Six Eagles had multiple hits, led by senior Jackson Martin (Listowel, Ontario-Listowel), who went 4-for-5 day, including a double and four RBIs. Sophomore Brennan Williams (Commerce Township, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern) finished the day with a 2-for-3 effort, including his first career home run, as well as three RBIs.
Other Eagles to stuff the stat sheet were senior Austin Wilson (Valrico, Fla.-Bloomingdale Sr.) who had a 3-for-4 effort, with a pair of doubles, as well as a pair of RBIs. Redshirt junior Michael Mioduszewski (Dexter, Mich.-Dexter) ended the game 3-for-4 at the dish including a double and three runs scored. Finally sophomore David Lett (Farmington Hills, Mich.-North Farmington) had a 3-for-5 game with two RBIs.
On the defensive side, junior right-handed pitcher Sam Delaplane (San Jose, Calif.-Leigh) made just the fourth start in his career for EMU. The former closer kept the Maverick's (0-1) bats mostly at bay, only allowing six hits in 6.2 innings of work, earning the win. He struck out eight, which tied a career-high.
Coming in relief of Delaplane were senior left-handed pitcher Michael Marsinek (Streetsboro, Ohio-Streetsboro) and junior righty Josh Bravin (Las Vegas, Nev.-Silverado (Palomar College)) in his EMU debut. The two relievers combined for 2.1 shutout innings, only allowing one hit. Marsinek struck out a batter.
The Eagles faced some early adversity after a two-run home run for UNO in the first inning gave them the lead in the early going.
EMU had a golden opportunity to put runs on the board in the bottom of the second when the bases loaded up with two outs, but Omaha got out of the jam to preserve the lead. That lead went to 3-0 in the top of the fourth on a solo homerun for Omaha.
The tide turned in the bottom half of the frame though, as EMU exploded for a huge 10-run inning. With one out, Mioduszewski and Martin ripped back-to-back singles to put runners on the corners. Following a strikeout for the second out, Wilson cranked an RBI double to put EMU on the board. This was followed up by a two runs scoring on a Lett single, tying the game at three apiece.
The two-out rally continued when Lett was balked home after stealing second and advancing to third on an error, giving EMU its first lead. It was extended to 6-3 on back-to-back RBI singles from Williams and junior John Montgomery (Anaheim Hills, Calif.-JSerra). Then the floodgates opened when, after Mioduszewski's second single in the inning, Martin ripped a bases-clearing three-RBI double to put the score at 9-3 EMU. After a final run was tacked on by a third UNO error, EMU stood on top 10-3 going to the fifth inning.
After a scoreless fifth for UNO, Eastern west back to work in the bottom half. Lett led off with a single, and advanced to second on a fielder's choice, but it would not matter as the next batter, Williams, crushed a two-run homerun to tack on two more insurance runs, and put Eastern up 12-3.
The Eagles did not let up in the sixth, tacking on another run on yet another RBI from Martin, a single that scored Mioduszewski. Later in the inning, Wilson knocked in another run on a single of his own, putting EMU ahead 14-3 going into the seventh.
Two more runs came around in the bottom of the eighth, including the first career hit and RBI from freshman John Rensel Jr. (Tallmadge, Ohio-Tallmadge), and another on a fielder's choice. When it was all said and done, EMU held on for the decisive 16-3 victory.
The Eagles are back in action tomorrow, Feb. 20 with doubleheader action from Georgia. First is a rematch with Omaha at noon, followed by a meeting with NJIT immediately following the first game.
