YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) –
The Eastern Michigan University tennis team dropped a 7-0 decision to Xavier University Friday, Feb. 12, when the Eagles (2-5) welcomed the Musketeers (5-2) to the Chippewa Racquet Club in Ypsilanti. Despite cruising to a 6-3 victory in the No. 1 doubles match to open the dual, the Green and White was unable to pick up a win in the remainder of the match.

The match began with doubles play as the Eagles were unable to grab the doubles point. The No. 1 duo of Andrea Martinovska and Klara Supejova made quick work of Xavier's top doubles squad, 6-3, however Renu Sharma and Anna Veleva dropped their No. 3 match, 6-1. It came down to the No. 2 doubles match as Ani Gogvadze and Marie Mayerova led the Musketeer duo of Cristina Di Lorenzo and Alex Brinker, 5-2. The Xavier squad was able to rattle off five straight games, to take a 7-5 victory, grabbing the doubles point and a 1-0 lead for the Musketeers.

Gogvadze was the first to finish her match at No. 2, falling, 6-4, 6-0, before Sharma dropped a 6-0, 6-2, decision to Xavier's Sophia Abelson in the No. 6 position. Supejova fell at No. 1, 6-4, 6-2, for just the third time this season, while Mayerova fell to Amina Ismail, 6-2, 7-5, in third position. The final two matches of the dual went to tiebreakers, however both Martinovska and Veleva fell in their respective matches.

"Bad loss today," remarked Head Coach Ryan Ray. "We competed too well, and had too many leads we let slip away to lose every point deciding match. Xavier is a great team, but we need to start finishing matches where we are in control. It's critical we improve in this area."

Eastern returns to action Tuesday, Feb. 23, when they hit the road for their trip to the Sunshine State. The Eagles will first take on Florida Gulf Coast University Tuesday evening at 5 p.m. in Fort Myers, Fla.
