Wrestling to Host Tri-Dual With Cleveland State, Indiana, Sunday

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team opens home dual action when it hosts a tri-dual against Cleveland State and Indiana, Sunday, Dec. 11. EMU and CSU begin the day at 9 a.m., followed by CSU vs. IU at 10:30 a.m., and EMU vs. IU to wrap things up at noon.

LOOKING FOR VICTORY OVER THE VIKINGS: EMU and CSU are an even 11-11 in the all-time series, with Sunday marking the 12th straight season the two teams have faced off. This season, the Vikings are 1-2 in dual action, with one of the losses coming to MAC foe Kent State by a 40-3 tally.

SHOWDOWN WITH THE HOOSIERS: IU and EMU have met 12 times in their histories, with Indiana claiming victory in all 12 duals. Currently, the Hoosiers are 4-1 with a dual upcoming against nationally ranked Wisconsin. They have two nationally ranked wrestlers, with Elijah Oliver No. 17 at 125 and Nate Jackson No. 10 at 184.

LAST SEASON AGAINST CSU: EMU handled its first road match of the 2015-16 season with ease with a 32-3 win over Cleveland State University at the Wolstein Center, Nov. 20. The Eagles controlled the dual from the start, winning the first eight bouts of the night to take a commanding 29-0 lead.  Despite dropping the ninth match, they cleaned up in the final matchup to take nine of ten on the night. In total the Eagles won one bout via pin, while another was won on a technical fall.  The other seven matchups ended in favor of the Eagles by decisions.

LAST SEASON VS INDIANA: Eastern dropped a dual with host Indiana, 25-9, Dec. 13. Despite the final score and final decision count (7-3), the dual was closer than the final score would indicate.  EMU gave up one major decision and one medical forfeit, while only being outscored by just 12 points in the other five bouts.

GONSER TAKES FIFTH, HUTCHISON SEVENTH AT CLIFF KEEN INVITE: Eastern Michigan wrapped up competition at the Cliff Keen Invitational, Dec. 3. The Eagles went up against some of the top teams in the country and came away with a tied for 16th team finish out of 34 teams, placing two wrestlers in the top-eight. Overall, EMU notched 34 team points over the two-day tournament. Noah Gonser took fifth at 125 lbs. with a 5-2 record, while redshirt junior Gage Hutchison took seventh in the heavyweight division with a 5-2 record as well.

EAGLES IN THE NATIONAL RANKINGS: A trio of Eagles found themselves ranked nationally after a strong showing at the Cliff Keen Invite. Redshirt freshman Noah Gonser is ranked No. 19 by The OpenMat, as well as No. 25 by TrackWrestling at 125 lbs. Redshirt junior Gage Hutchison entered the heavyweight rankings at No. 25 by TrackWreslting. Finally, redshirt junior Kyle Springer stayed ranked as No. 24 by TrackWreslting, and No. 16 by WIN Magazine.

MOVING UP THE RECORD BOOK: Redshirt senior Nick Barber has 75 victories in his EMU career, which ranks 14th on the all-time list with. Recent EMU Hall of Fame inductee Steve Brown holds the all-time record with 117 wins. Barber trails Doug Harper and Nick Wittenburg by three wins for 12th all-time.

UP NEXT ON THE MATS: The Eagles are off from dual action until after the New Year, but have one more tournament before the ball drops. EMU will head to Evanston, Ill. for the Ken Kraft Midlands Tournament, Dec. 29-30.
