Allendale, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) –
The Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team opened the 2016 season, Friday, Dec. 2, at the GVSU Holiday Open in Allendale, Mich. The Eagles had a strong day like last year, posting many personal-bests, including some of the top-marks in program history.

"We had some strong performances, and also some areas that could have been better, which is typical of early season meets," explained Head Coach Sue Parks. "It was great to get a competition in and post some marks before final exams and the holiday break. Today is just a starting point and we will work on getting better with each meet."

Junior Jasmine Jones (Grensburg, Pa. – Hempfield Area) had a strong day in the 60m dash, qualifying into the finals with a prelims time of 7.62 seconds. Joining her in the finals was freshman Brittni Mason (Richmond Heights, Ohio – Wests Geauga) who took seventh in 7.82 seconds, and junior Allyson Goff (White Lake, Mich. – Walled Lake Northern), who took eighth in 7.87. Jasmine stole the show once again in the finals, clocking in just a hair quicker than her prelims mark with a career-best time of 7.61 to win the event. Mason finished fifth in 7.83, while Goff was seventh in 7.87.

Moving to the 200m dash, Mason had another solid race, taking third in 25.99. Fellow freshman Catherine Mittiga (South Bend, Ind. – John Adams) finished ninth with a time of 27.20, while senior Natalie Uy (Kettering, Ohio – Fairmont) and junior Tifani Byrd (Toms River, N.J. – Toms River North) nabbed 13th and 14th in 27.37 and 27.45, respectively. Jones was then the team's only competitor in the 300m, but she came away with another event victory, posting an EMU record and career-best time of 39.22 seconds.

The team also had just one competitor in the 400m, as sophomore Jocelyn Sharpe (Westerville, Ohio – Westerville North) took eighth in 59.37, which was a personal-best. Similarly, only freshman Gabrielle Peck (Ann Arbor, Mich. – Skyline) ran in the 800m, crossing the finish line in 2:30.10, which was also good for eighth. A pair of Eagles ran in the mile, with junior Claire Mesa (Rockford, Ill. – Rockford Lutheran) bringing home sixth with a time of 5:17.87, while fellow junior Rebekah Branham (Circleville, Ohio – Circleville) took 10th in 5:29.54.

Four EMU runners participated in the 3000m, with junior Jordann McDermitt (Davison, Mich. – Davison) pacing the group with a third-place finish in 9:25.64. Junior Danielle Bentzley (Birmingham, Mich. – Seaholm) finished 13th in the race with a personal-best time of 10:16.62, while junior Lauren Pottschmidt (Granger, Ind. – Penn) took home 17th in 10:25.89, also a career-best.

Two Eagles took home top-five finishes in the 5000m, as junior Natalie Cizmas (Clinton Twp., Mich. – Chippewa Valley) finished fourth by posting the second-quickest time in EMU history at 16:12.72, which was a personal-best. Just behind her, senior Alsu Bogdanova (Kazan, Russia – Lyceum #83) took fifth, clocking in at a career-best 16:20.77, improving her hold on the third-best mark in program history. Sophomore Sydney Meyers (Zionsville, Ind. – Zionsville Community) also had a top-10 finish, taking eighth with a time of 16:44.93, bumping her into seventh in the EMU record books.

EMU swept the top-two spots in the 60m hurdles prelims, as Goff and Byrd took first and second with times of 8.62 and 8.80, respectively, sending both to the finals. There, Goff took the silver in 8.72 seconds, while Byrd nabbed sixth in 8.92. Moving to the 4x400m relay, the group of senior Dayna Hurd (Carson, Calif. – Carson), Goff, Sharpe, and Jones brought home second in 3:53.70, while Mason, freshman Gianna Salzbrunn (North Aurora, Ill. – Montini Catholic), junior Dace Dreimane (Ventspils, Latvia - Ventspils Gymnasium No. 1), and Mittiga took seventh with a time of 4:07.48.

Coyne also took part in the triple jump, bringing home fourth with a mark of 11.32 meters/ 37 feet 1.75-inches. Two Eagles competed in the weight throw, with sophomore Morgan Turner (Norwalk, Ohio – Norwalk) nabbing 17th with a throw of 14.11 meters/ 46 feet 3.5-inches, which was good for 10th in EMU history, and senior Megan Pendleton (Lindsey, Ohio – Woodmoore) taking 26th with a mark of 13.01 meters/ 42 feet 8.25-inches.

This marked the only meet for the Eagles in 2016. Their next meet will take place after the holidays, as EMU will attend the Harvey Simmons Invitational, Jan. 14.
