Redshirt junior Gage Hutchison remains alive for day two tomorrow
EVANSTON, Ill. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team completed competition on day one of the 54th annual Ken Kraft Midlands Championships today, Dec. 29. The Eagles went up against some of the best wrestlers in the country, and redshirt junior Gage Hutchison (Buchanan, Mich.-Buchanan) was the lone Eagle to advance to day two.
Eastern sent 10 grapplers onto the mats on day one, and came away with 12 wins total. As a team, EMU sits in 22nd out of 42 teams with 20 points.
A defending eighth place finisher at The Midlands, Hutchison got his day at heavyweight started on a low note, dropping his first round match to No. 10 seeded Cody Crawford of Oregon State, 3-2. He would have to continue competition in the consolation bracket to attempt to place.
In his first wrestle-back bout, Hutchison met No. 20 nationally ranked, and No. 7 seeded Ray O'Donnell of Princeton. He commanded the entire match, which ended in a 16-1 technical fall to extend his day to later in the evening.
After a break, Hutchison met his second straight nationally ranked grappler in No. 10 Brooks Black of Illinois, who was seeded No. 4 in the tournament. The bout went to overtime tied at 1-1, but after a shot from Black, Hutchison deflected it and turned it into the decisive takedown for the win.
Needing one more win to advance to day two of competition, Hutchison met the No. 12 seeded wrestler Tyler Kral of Purdue. The Boilermaker was unprepared for the heavyweight's attack, as he knocked him back for the takedown, and quickly pinned him in just 10 seconds to take his third straight victory over a seeded opponent.
Elsewhere for EMU, seven other wrestlers picked up wins before being knocked out of the tournament. Two of those grapplers won multiple bouts, with redshirt freshman Zac Carson (Akron, Ohio-Lake) and redshirt sophomore Derek Hillman (Woodhaven, Mich.-Woodhaven) winning twice. Carson picked up a fall, while both of Hillman's losses came against nationally ranked opponents.
The other Eagles to win matches were redshirt freshmen Sa'Derian Perry (Lakeland, Fla.-Lake Gibson) and J.J. Wolfe (Dakota, Ill.-Dakota), redshirt sophomore Armando Torres (Lorain, Ohio-Elyria), redshirt junior Kyle Springer (New Boston, Mich.-Davenport Assumption (Indiana)), and redshirt senior Devan Marry (Hudson, Mich.-Hudson). Wolfe's victory came over the No. 9 seed by an 18-7 major decision.
Hutchison will continue day two of The Midlands tomorrow, Dec. 30. Competition from Welsh-Ryan will begin at 1 p.m.
