Hutchison Claims Fourth at The Midlands Championships

The heavyweight had the best finish for an Eagle since 2000
DAY 1 RECAP
EVANSTON, Ill. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team concluded competition at the 54th Annual Ken Kraft Midlands Championships today, Dec. 30, with a huge day from redshirt junior heavyweight Gage Hutchison (Buchanan, Mich.-Buchanan), who took fourth place out of 42 of the best wrestlers in the country.
The fourth place finish was the best for an EMU grappler at The Midlands since 2000, when Mike Feeney took second place at 174 lbs. Hutchison racked up six wins over the two days of competition, including wins over three nationally ranked opponents, and four who were seeded in the tournament. The returning national qualifier improved on his seventh place showing at The Midlands a year ago. As a team, EMU finished 18th out of 42 teams, with 34.5 points.
During day one of competition, Hutchison dropped his first bout by a tight 3-2 decision to fall into the consolation bracket. There, he won his next three matches to advance into day two of the tournament.
Starting the day against his fifth straight seeded opponent, and third nationally ranked foe, Hutchison went to work needing a win to extend his time at The Midlands. Going against No. 14 ranked and No. 6 seeded Ross Larson of Oklahoma, Hutchison picked up where he left off, smothering his opponent, and pinning him in just 40 seconds, his second straight pin in less than a minute. With the victory, Hutchison guaranteed himself a top-eight finish for the second straight year.
In the consolation quarterfinals, Hutchison went up against Conan Jennings of host Northwestern. After a scoreless first, Hutchison started bottom in the second. Following a penalty point on NU, Hutchison notched a reversal to take a 3-0 lead into the third. The final period began neutral, and Hutchison felled an attack to notch a takedown near the end of the frame, sealing the 5-0 decision and a top-six finish.
After a medical forfeit in the consolation semifinals, Hutchison automatically advanced to the consolation finals for a chance to take third. In the third place match, he would meet his sixth Midlands seeded opponent and fourth nationally ranked foe in Iowa's Sam Stoll, who is No. 5 nationally and the No. 3 seed.
The first period ended 2-1 in favor of Stoll after a takedown and an escape, but the Hawkeye wrestler racked up the riding time over one minute into the second. Starting on bottom in the second, Hutchison was eventually rolled and pinned in 4:45, securing the fourth place finish for the Eagle.
Eastern gets back into action when it rings in the New Year by opening MAC dual action Friday, Jan. 6 when it hosts Ohio University. The dual in the Convocation Center Aux Gym is set to begin at 7 p.m.
