EMU had three wrestlers advance to day two of the tournament
LAS VEGAS (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team completed day one of the Cliff Keen Invitational today, Dec. 2. Of the Eagles' 10 wrestlers, three advanced to day two of the prestigious tournament.
Redshirt freshman Noah Gonser (Grand Blanc, Mich.-Grand Blanc), redshirt senior Nick Barber (Cleveland, Ohio-St. Edward), and redshirt junior Gage Hutchison (Buchanan, Mich.-Buchanan) all remain alive in the consolation brackets of their respective weight classes. As a team, EMU is currently tied for 21st of 34 teams with 15.5 points.
Gonser began his day with a tight 2-0 decision over Jens Lantz of Wisconsin, with the winning points coming on a reversal in the third period. He followed that up by upsetting No. 5 seeded and No. 16 national seed Austin Assad of Michigan by 6-3 decision to become the lone Eagle to get to the quarterfinals of the championship bracket. In the quarters, Gonser met No. 4 seeded and No. 14 nationally ranked Sean Russell of Edinboro. The ranked opponent finished the job, defeating Gonser 7-3 to send him to the consolation, which will pick back up tomorrow.
Barber, as the No. 10 seed, won his opener by a tight 3-2 decision over Fredy Stroker of Minnesota. In the Round of 16, he was knocked off by No. 7 seed Coleman Hammond of CSU-Bakersfield to drop to the consolation round. In the first match in the consolation, Barber rebounded with a commanding 9-0 major decision. He clinched his spot in day two after another consolation victory, this time by 8-3 decision.
Hutchison entered the day as the No. 9 heavyweight, and quickly got his day started with a first period fall in just 37 seconds. In his Round of 16 matchup, he clashed with Quean Smith of Iowa State, but ultimately fell by a close 5-2 decision to fall to the consolation round. In his first bout following the defeat, Hutchison clinched a major decision, 12-3, to advance. In his second consolation bout, he once again pinned his opponent, this time coming in 1:49 to get to day two.
Elsewhere, two other Eagles picked up wins on the day with redshirt senior Jacob Davis (North Ridgeville, Ohio-St. Edward) and senior Shayne Wireman (Lansing, Mich.-Holt) both getting victories before injury defaulting out of the tournament.
Davis drew a favorable matchup in his first bout, as he avenged his dual loss to Dom Rigous of Clarion with a 5-3 decision. In the Round of 16, he met No. 6 seeded and No. 14 nationally ranked Nick Wanzek of Minnesota. The veteran held tough but ultimately fell by 4-2 decision to drop to the wrestle-backs. In his first consolation, Davis bounced back with a 3-2 decision to keep his day alive before injury defaulting his second consolation bout.
At 133 lbs., Wireman won his first bout with a dominating 13-3 major decision. In the Round of 16, the Lansing native fell to No. 1 seed and No. 3 national ranked Nate Tomasello of Ohio State. Despite having a chance to place in the consolation rounds, Wireman had to medically forfeit his consolation bout, ending his day.
In Eastern's other five weight classes, EMU's participants all went two and out against some of the top competition in the tournament and the country.
Action will pick back up tomorrow at noon with Gonser, Barber, and Hutchison looking to place in the top eight of their weight classes.
