EMU took third place as a team in the event

PHILADELPHIA (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team completed a busy weekend with a top-three team showing at the Keystone Classic, Sunday, Nov. 20. The Eagles took third in a field of 12 teams, and were led by redshirt junior Kyle Springer (New Boston, Mich.-Davenport Assumption (Indiana)), who won the 141 lbs. crown.

In total, EMU placed eight wrestlers in the top-six of their weight classes. Also placing on the day were redshirt freshman Noah Gonser (Grand Blanc, Mich.-Grand Blanc), who captured runner-up honors at 125 lbs., and senior Shayne Wireman (Lansing, Mich.-Holt), redshirt freshman J.J. Wolfe (Dakota, Ill.-Dakota), and redshirt senior Jacob Davis (North Ridgeville, Ohio-St. Edward), who all took fourth at 133 lbs., 157 lbs., and 174 lbs., respectively.

Redshirt senior Nick Barber (Cleveland, Ohio-St. Edward) finished fifth at 149 lbs., while redshirt sophomore Kayne MacCallum (Green Oaks, Ill.-Libertyville) and redshirt junior Gage Hutchison (Buchanan, Mich.-Buchanan) finished sixth at 184 lbs. and heavyweight, respectively.

As a team, EMU had 14 wrestlers hit the mats throughout the day. In total, they racked up 34 wins, good for 110.5 points, and the third place team finish. They placed behind No. 2 Penn State (221.5) and No. 21 Pittsburgh (121.5), and just ahead of No. 23 Appalachian State (95.5), who took home fourth.

Springer got his day started with a huge upset, defeating No. 11 ranked Jimmy Gulibon of Penn State by 8-5 decision. Gulibon was ranked No. 1 in the tournament. He followed that up with a 12-6 decision in the quarterfinals, and then a 6-4 decision over the No. 4 seeded Robert Lee of Pitt. In the finals, Springer upended another Nittany Lion, this time Kade Moss, by 5-2 decision to take the 141 lbs. title.

Gonser got his second-place finish started with an upset of his own, by a thrilling 15-14 decision over No. 2 seeded J.R. Wert of Rider. In the quarters, he dominated with a pin in 3:19, and advanced to the finals with a 5-2 decision over the No. 3 seed. There he met No. 1 seeded and No. 6 nationally ranked Nick Suriano of Penn State. Despite notching a couple takedowns, Gonser was felled by 12-4 major decision.

Making his season debut, Wireman began his day with an 8-2 decision before falling to No. 2 seeded and No. 9 nationally ranked Jered Cortez of Penn State. In the wrestle backs, Wireman rattled off three straight wins by 7-4, 7-3, and 11-10 decisions before meeting Cortez again in the third place bout. The Nittany Lion was once again victorious, placing Wireman in fourth.

Wolfe entered the tournament back in his usual 157 lbs. after wrestling up one class in the dual against Clarion, Friday. The Illinois native began his day with a third period fall in 5:36 to get to the quarters. There, he was defeated by No. 3 seeded and No. 20 nationally ranked Neal Richards of VMI. In the consolations, Wolfe won three in a row by 8-4 decision, 5-0 decision, and then a forfeit to get to the third place match, before losing and taking fourth.

Davis entered the tournament as the No. 5 seed, and began his day with a 3-2 decision, and then a 4-3 decision over the No. 4 seed. In the semifinals, he dropped a hard-fought 6-0 decision to No. 1 seeded and No. 13 nationally ranked Geno Morelli of Penn State. In the consolation semifinals, Davis got to the finals after a 7-6 decision over the No. 6 seed. In the finals, he was knocked off in a revenge match by the No. 4 seed he defeated earlier, to finish in fourth.

Barber also entered as the No. 5 seed. He won his first two matches by decision, 6-3 and 7-6, before being defeated by the No. 4 seed in the quarterfinals. He rebounded in the consolation bracket, winning by 10-3 decision and then 9-7 decision to get to the consolation semis. He fell by 10-8 decision there to drop to the fifth place match, where he powered through and took fifth with an 8-2 decision.

MacCallum had one of the toughest tasks of the day when he faced reigning NCAA runner-up Bo Nickal of Penn State to start his day. The No. 3 nationally ranked wrestler took care of business, sending MacCallum to the consolation round. MacCallum went to work there, winning his first bout with an overtime pin, and then an 8-1 decision to get to the consolation semis. After dropping his bout there, MacCallum wrestled for fifth where he fell in a 9-4 decision to the No. 4 seed, taking sixth.

Hutchison began his day with a boom, pinning his opponent in the first minute of the first period (0:56). His reward was to face the No. 1 seeded and No. 8 nationally ranked Denzel Dejournette of Appalachian State. Hutchison dropped the bout, 8-1, setting him up in the consolation round. He picked up his second pin in under a minute, this time in 59 seconds, to get to the consilation-semis. There he fell, 4-1, to the No. 3 seed to drop to the fifth place match. Despite a close dual, he took sixth after falling 2-1.

Elsewhere, other Eagles picked up wins despite not placing in the top six.  Redshirt freshman Jared Langley (Newton, Kan.-Newton) came close to placing, winning three bouts, including one by fall (3:44).

Redshirt sophomore Armando Torres (Lorain, Ohio-Elyria) won one of his matches by fall at 125 lbs. in the third period (6:48). Fellow redshirt sophomore Derek Hillman (Woodhaven, Mich.-Woodhaven) also won one bout at 197 lbs. by decision, 8-4. Finally redshirt freshman Zac Carson (Akron, Ohio-Lake) had the quickest fall of the day for any Eagle in his lone win at 157 lbs., pinning his opponent in just 40 seconds.

The Eagles are now off until after the Thanksgiving holiday. They return to action when they fly west to take part in the Cliff Keen Tournament in Las Vegas. The two-day event will run from Friday, Dec. 2 to Saturday, Dec. 3.
