Gogvadze and Veleva win consolation round of their doubles flight
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – Eastern Michigan University's tennis team completed day two of the 2016 Purdue Invitational Saturday, Oct. 8, as the Eagles had a pair of doubles squads in action and four singles matches were played. Juniors Ani Gogvadze (Tbilisi, Georgia-Khikani) and Anna Veleva (Sofia, Bulgaria) were able to come away victorious in a pair of contests, including a win in the finals of the Black Flight consolation round.
The day began in the morning with doubles play as Gogvadze and Veleva captured a 6-3 victory over Bowling Green's Anna Kholodnaya and Polina Radeva. The duo took the Black Flight consolation finals match, 6-3, by defeating Vanina Iordanova and Zoe Manion from Xavier. Junior Andrea Martinovska (Plzn, Czech Republic-Sport and Management School) and sophomore Marie Mayerova (Krmelin, Czech Republic) competed in the Gold Flight, defeating Michigan State's Erin Faulkner and Davina Nguyen, 6-3, in the consolation semis. Making it to the finals, the duo was unable to top Ball State's Audrey Berger and Julia Sbircea, 7-5.
Moving on to singles play, the Green and White did not fair as well. Veleva was the only Eagle to come away with a win. Veleva was taking on Lipscomb's Denis Buberi and fell behind by a set after Buberi took set one, 6-0. Veleva was able to respond, sweeping the next two, 6-4 and 6-2.
Eastern closes out the Purdue Invitational with singles play Sunday, Oct. 9. The final day will be the Eagles' last tune up prior to the 2016 Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Midwest Regional.
