Eagles fell in five sets on the road
ATHENS, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team hit the road in Mid-American Conference play Saturday, Oct. 8, and fell in five sets to Ohio University, 25-18, 23-25, 22-25, 25-19, 15-8. The Eagles (7-12, 2-4 MAC) have now lost three in a row, while the Bobcats (9-9, 5-1 MAC) have won three-straight.
The Eagles saw multiple career-highs set in the match led by freshman Rachel Irbe (Greenfield, Ind.-Greenfield Central) who posted career-bests in kills with 18. Freshman Riley Taylor (Indianapolis, Ind.-Perry Meridian) notched a best of 50 assists, while grabbing a high of four aces and tying her best of 11 digs. Senior Devon Murray (Shelby, Ohio-Shelby) added 13 kills, while sophomore Jordan Smith (Solon, Iowa-Solon) and junior Kelly Ferguson (Lemont, Ill.-Lemont) added 11 and 10, respectively. As a team, the Eagles hit .217, while the Bobcats bested them with a .288 percentage.
EMU fell behind early as Ohio grabbed a 25-18 set victory in the opening frame. Irbe and Murray each grabbed five kills, but the Bobcats hit at a .400 mark to take the opening frame. Additionally, Taylor was able to tally 14 of her 50 assists in the opening set.
In set two, the Green and White fell behind by as many as seven, 19-12, but the Eagles mounted a comeback, defeating the Bobcats, 25-23, to knot up the match heading into the break. Murray grabbed another five kills, while the rest of the squad spread the offensive firepower. It was the EMU defense that got the job done, holding Ohio to a .085 attack percentage in the frame.
Set three saw Irbe add another five kills to her total, while the Eagles also outhit Ohio on their way to a 25-22 set win. With that, EMU took a 2-1 lead and looked to knock the Bobcats off heading into set four.
The Ohio offense turned up the heat in set four, hitting at a scorching .355 percentage. The Bobcats' Mallory Salis and Jaime Kasiorek each added six kills in the frame, posting 12-of-14 kills total for the set. Ohio was able to come away with a 25-18 set victory, knotting up the match.
OU came out firing in the final set, posting a .733 attack percentage, grabbing 11 kills on their way to a 15-8 final. Ohio did not make an error, going 11-of-15 in the final set.
Eastern continues the grueling MAC schedule Friday, Oct. 14, when they return to Ypsilanti to take on Bowling Green State University. First serve is slated for 7 p.m. at the Convocation Center and can be seen live on Eagle All-Access.
