Eagles Finish Up Day One of the Purdue Invitational

The first day in West Lafayette is complete
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University tennis team began competition at the 2016 Purdue Invitational Friday, Oct. 7, when they traveled to West Lafayette, Ind. to take part in the final tournment before the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Midwest Regional later this month, Oct. 20-25.
The day began with doubles action, as the Eagles saw some familiar competition on the opening day. Andrea Martinovska (Plzn, Czech Republic-Sport and Management School) and Marie Mayerova (Krmelin, Czech Republic) tangled with Miami's Andreea Badileanu and Anzhelika Shapovalova but fell, 6-1, before defeating Illinois' Jerricka Boone and Grace Tapak, 7-6 (1). Ani Gogvadze (Tbilisi, Georgia-Khikhani) and Anna Veleva (Sofia, Bulgaria) dropped their opening match, 6-0, before taking down MAC foe, Erin Rodriguez and Hannah Shteyn from Miami, 6-2. Finally, Alejandra Barcelo Almoyna (Alicante, Spain-IES Figueras Racheco) teamed up with Miami's Emily Struble for a match but the duo fell, 6-1.
In singles play, Gogvadze took down Julia Sbireca from Ball State, 6-2, 2-6, 6-2, advancing to round two of her flight, while Martinovska, Mayerova, and Veleva each dropped two set matches to fall into the consolation sides of their respective flights.
The Eagles continue action Saturday, Oct. 8, at the Purdue Invitational. Doubles play will begin at 9 a.m. with singles action to follow.
