Eastern Falls to Central in Five Set Contest

EMU dropped their second-straight MAC matchup
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team dropped a five-set match Thurday night, Oct. 6, when it traveled upstate to Mount Pleasant, Mich. to take on Central Michigan University. After splitting the first four sets, the Chippewas (8-9, 2-3 MAC) were able to take down EMU (7-11, 2-3 MAC), 15-8, in the final set of the match.
Offensively, the Eagles saw both Jordan Smith (Solon, Iowa-Solon) and Devon Murray (Shelby, Ohio-Shelby) put together solid outings with 13 and 10 kills, apiece. Additionally, Riley Taylor (Indianapolis, Ind.-Perry Meridian) added a career-best eight kills, while Kelly Ferguson (Lemont, Ill.-Lemont (Austin Peay)) added seven and both Rachel Irbe (Greenfield, Ind.-Greenfield Central) and Samantha Falco (Antioch, Ill.-Antioch Community) each contributed six kills in the match. Taylor maintained the setting duties with 33 assists, while Alyssa LaFace (Allen Park, Mich.-Allen Park) was the only Eagle to notch double-digit digs with 22.
The Eagles were able to revenge a 25-22 set loss in the opening frame by taking down CMU, 25-15, in set two. The Green and White hit at an incredible .333 in the set, grabbing four kills from Irbe. Eastern continued its strong offensive play in set three with a .429 percentage as Murray went 6-of-8 in her attack attempts during the third set. CMU, however, did not fade, grabbing a 25-17 and a 15-8 set victories in the final two, walking away with a win over Eastern.
EMU continues the season Saturday, Oct. 8, when it travels to Ohio University to take on the Bobcats. First serve is slated for 7 p.m. and the match is available live on ESPN3.
