YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Riding its first three-game winning streak in 21 years, the Eastern Michigan University football team returns to Rynearson Stadium Saturday, Oct. 8, for a Homecoming date with Mid-American Conference West Division foe the University of Toledo.  Saturday's contest is Homecoming with plenty of activities planned on and off campus in a week-long celebration with the festivities culminating with the Eagles hooking up with the Rockets at 3 p.m. on the gray turf inside "The Factory".
EMU is 4-1 (1-0 MAC) after posting a 28-25 road triumph at defending league champion Bowling Green State University, Oct. 1. Meanwhile, UT (3-1, 0-0 MAC) is coming off a lengthy trip to Provo, Utah that saw the team drop a 55-53 shootout at BYU, Sept. 30.
The contest will be televised by the Buckeye Cable Sports Network (BCSN) with Mason Lowry providing the play-by-play and Mike Robinson serving as the analyst. WEMU (89.1 FM) will provide audio coverage of the game with Matt Shepard and Rob Rubick calling the action on the field.

EMU RECEIVES VOTE IN THE AMWAY COACHES POLL: EMU received one point in the Oct. 2 release of the Amway Coaches Poll after its 4-1 start to the 2016 season. The Eagles were one of 25 teams outside the top 25 that received votes. The poll is made up of 64 Football Bowl Subdivision head coaches from around the country and all are members of the American Football Coaches Association.
The recognition marks the first time since 1987 that Eastern Michigan has received votes in a national poll. EMU collected 18 points in the final release of The Associated Press rankings following the then-Huron's 30-27 upset of San Jose State in the California Bowl. Should the poll have carried out further, EMU would have been ranked 31st behind Texas (26), Indiana (27), Pittsburgh (28), Wyoming (29), and Penn State (30).

BOMBS AWAY BARNES: Redshirt junior Austin Barnes continues to have a great season punting the ball. Barnes booted five punts in the Oct. 1 game against Bowling Green, for a season-best average of 50.0 yards per punt and a high of 56 yards. He pinned the Falcons inside the 20 three times, including inside their own five yard line twice. For his efforts, he was selected the MAC's West Division Special Teams Player of the Week for the first time in his career.
His season average of 47.6 is ranked fourth in the country and first in the MAC. The fourth-year punter holds a career average of 43.0 yards, which is second all-time in EMU history, while his 6,019 total yards ranks eighth all-time.

BIGGEST TURNAROUNDS: Five games into the 2016 season, Eastern Michigan has improved on its 2015 win total by three games, from one win to four. This ties them with UCF for biggest turnarounds in the FBS so far this season. The Knights have three wins on the season after going winless in 2015.

PARTY LIKE IT'S 1995: For the first time since 1995, the Eagles have started a season with a 4-1 record. That season, the Eagles finished the year at 6-5, which represents EMU's last winning record. 1995 was also the last time EMU won three games in a row.

MILESTONE VICTORY OVER THE FALCONS: With EMU's 28-25 win over Bowling Green, Oct. 1, the Eagles defeated BGSU for the first time since 2008. Furthermore, the win was EMU's first MAC-opening road win since the 2005 season, which also represents the last time EMU recorded two road wins in the same season, with victories at Central Michigan, Sept. 24, and at Buffalo, Nov. 19.

RUN DEFENSE THRIVING: The Eagles' run defense has been the strength of that unit this season after struggling to stop the run one season ago. EMU is 38th in the country and third in the MAC in rushing defense, only giving up 189.0 yards per game. The most yards EMU has yielded in a game this season was 206 to Bowling Green, Oct. 1, the first time they gave up more than 200 on the ground in 2016. Last season, EMU allowed opponents to rush for 316.8 yards per game, and only held one opponent to fewer than 200 yards rushing in a game.

THE DIFFERENCE A YEAR MAKES: In its first season under new defensive coordinator Neal Neathery and his 4-2-5 scheme, Eastern Michigan has seen remarkable improvement in its overall defense. Through five games this season, EMU has allowed just 1,973 total yards (394.6 per game). Last season, the Eagles had allowed 2,472 yards through five games (494.4 per game). EMU's defense ranks 66th in the country and seventh in the MAC.

OFFENSE KEEPS CHURNING: The Eagles' offense, meanwhile, is picking up where it left off from last season. The unit is ranked 49th in the country, fourth in the MAC, averaging 447.6 yards per game, while they are 50th in scoring, also fourth in the MAC, averaging 34.8 points a game. So far this season, EMU has put up three of the top-10 total yards' performances in Chris Creighton's tenure.

PROTECTING THE POCKET: EMU's veteran offensive line has done a tremendous job of protecting its quarterbacks this season, only allowing four sacks in five games. The 0.80 sacks allowed per game is good for 14th in the nation and second in the conference. Additionally, EMU has only allowed 3.40 tackles for loss per game, which ranks sixth in the nation and top in the MAC.

EFFICIENT IN THE RED ZONE: Both sides of the ball have got it done this season within the 20 yard lines. The offense has scored on 92 percent of its red zone opportunities, which is 27th in the nation and fourth in the MAC, while the defense has only allowed scores on 77.8 percent of red zone possessions, good for 37th in the nation and second in the MAC.

SETTING THE PACE: With his two pass breakups against Bowling Green, Oct. 1, senior DaQuan Pace is now the EMU record holder with 20 in his career since the stat began being tracked for EMU in 1998. He passed former Eagle Jerry Gaines who had 18 from 2001-04.

POC'S PRESENCE: Pat O'Connor continues to close the gap on being atop the EMU leaderboard for sacks since records were kept in 1998. O'Connor has 16 career sacks, which is second most in school history, just 1.5 sacks behind Kevin Howe who accumulated 17.5 for the Eagles from 2003-2006. His 4.5 sacks this season rank him 33rd in the country and third in the MAC.

FOCUSING ON THE FUMBLES: Eastern Michigan has had a knack of forcing fumbles so far this season. The Eagles have forced 10 fumbles and recovered seven of them in 2016. That is good for first in the MAC and second in the country. On the flip side, Eastern has only lost one fumble themselves this season, tying them for sixth in the nation.

WINNING THE TURNOVER BATTLE: So far this season, the Eagles have found success in games in which the squad has won the turnover battle. In total, Eastern holds a 12-10 TO advantage with a safety, four interceptions, and seven fumble recoveries. Not only is the squad getting the ball back, but it is taking advantage of it and putting points on the board. EMU has turned its 12 turnovers into 44 points, including seven touchdowns.

AN EAGLE WIN WOULD…: Should the Eagles defeat the Rockets, it would mark the best six-game start to a season since 1989 when EMU began 5-0-1. Additionally, the Eagles would be riding a four-game winning streak, which would be the best for EMU since 1994.

96th HOMECOMING: Saturday marks the 96th Homecoming for Eastern Michigan University, and the 89th time EMU has played a football game on Homecoming weekend. EMU is 44-42-2 all-time on Homecoming. This weekend will mark the fifth time EMU and UT will square off on Homecoming, with the series split at 2-2. The last time they played on the date was 2006, a 17-13 EMU victory.

ALL-TIME AGAINST THE ROCKETS: Eastern Michigan and Toledo have met 43 times in their histories, with the first meeting coming back in 1923. UT holds the all-time series lead at 32-11, including wins in the last nine meetings. EMU last claimed victory over the Rockets with a 17-13 win at Rynearson Stadium during Homecoming of the 2006 season.

LAST WIN VS UT: For the first time in seven years the Eastern Michigan University football team defeated the Toledo Rockets, 17-13, for its first victory of the 2006 season, Oct. 21, in Rynearson Stadium in the Eagles' annual Homecoming game. Down 13-11 late in the game, the Eagles' Trumaine Riley returned a kickoff 45 yards to the EMU 46-yard line.  The Eagles then put on a game-winning march, going 54 yards in five plays capped off by an 18-yard touchdown run by Pierre Walker to give the Eagles the victory.

EMU TO TOLEDO CONNECTIONS: With only about 50 miles between Rynearson Stadium and the Glass Bowl, the Eagles and Rockets are bound to have a few connections between the programs. EMU has six current players who are natives of the Toledo area, with Brogan Roback (Maumee, Ohio-Toledo St. John's Jesuit) and Keyan Marshall (Toledo, Ohio-Sylvania Southview) attending high school nearby, while four players, Jeremiah Harris, Brendan Renuis, Ivan Oraha and Alec Hullibarger, attended Temperance Bedford High School in Michigan, which is just under 10 miles from the Toledo city limits.

FRIENDLY FACES: With the close proximity of the schools, EMU and UT have numerous players who were teammates in high school, yet will be rivals come Saturday. EMU's DaQuan Pace and UT's DeJuan Rogers and Edrick Mathews attended Cass Tech High School in Detroit. Luke Maclean and Daniel Davis of Toledo were both Bobcats at Grand Blanc High School. Izaiah Fuller and Luke Doerger both made the trip from LaSalle High School in Cincinnati, while Richard Jones and Ja'Wuan Woodley also made a northern trip from Bishop Hartley High School in Columbus. Finally, Toledo native Brogan Roback will square off against two of his St. John's Jesuit High School teammates in Matt Winzeler and Liam Allen, while Eddie Daugherty will face his Mentor High School teammate Jake Floriea.

SPREADING THE LOVE: Through five games, Eastern Michigan has totaled just under 1,300 yards through the air, with 1,293, however none of EMU's receivers have recorded a 100-yard receiving game and none have more than 21 receptions. 13 different Eagles have recorded catches on the season, and six have at least one touchdown reception. EMU's leading receiver through five games is redshirt freshman Nigel Kilby, who has 256 yards on 15 catches and a team-high three touchdown catches.

ESSENCE OF FRICANO: Redshirt freshman Paul Fricano remains perfect on the season for PATs, going 22-for-22, which is the tied for third-most in the MAC.

ROBACK TRIFECTA: Redshirt junior Brogan Roback threw three touchdown passes, all in the second half, to help spurn EMU to the 28-25 win over Bowling Green, Oct. 1. It marked the fourth time Roback has thrown for three touchdown passes in his EMU career, which tied his career-high. The last time Roback completed the feat was against Wyoming last season, Sept. 12, in the 48-29 win.

TURNER TOPS 100: Redshirt freshman Breck Turner broke the 100-yard plateau for the first time in his career, Oct. 1, against Bowling Green. Turner ran for a career-high 107 yards on 17 carries, including a touchdown. Eclipsing the century mark, Turner became the third different Eagle to rush for 100+ yards this season, joining Ian Eriksen and Shaq Vann.

TRICKERY PAYS OFF: The Eagles reached into their bag of tricks against the Falcons, Oct. 1, setting up a score. Brogan Roback took the snap and immediately tossed a screen pass to Isaac Holder who then fired a 64-yard strike downfield to Nigel Kilby. Holder's 64-yard completion was the longest play of the game and marked the longest pass by a non-QB since Josh LeDuc tossed a 71-yard completion in 2010.

IKIE ALL OVER THE FIELD: Redshirt junior Ikie Calderon had an outstanding all-around defensive performance in the 28-25 win over Bowling Green, Oct. 1. The defensive back had 12 tackles (seven solo, five assisted) for the second double-digit tackling performance of his career. He also added the first sack of his career, a tackle for a loss, and a pass breakup.

HOLDER OF MANY TRADES: Redshirt freshman Isaac Holder showed off some of his versatility in the 28-25 win over Bowling Green, Oct. 1. The former high school quarterback completed a 64-yard pass on a trick play to set EMU up in the redzone. On the very next play, the current wide receiver caught his first career TD on an eight-yard reception from Brogan Roback.

PASS BREAK UPS: Eastern Michigan's defense stepped up in EMU's 28-25 win over BGSU, especially in the passing game. The Green and White defense totaled 12 pass break ups on the night, the most this season. In fact, the dozen of denials equaled the number the Eagles had accumulated through the first four games of the season, pushing their season total to 24. Jason Beck, DaQuan Pace, and Mike Brown each recorded two in the victory, while six other players added one apiece.

SETTING THE TABLE: The Eagles' kickoff return game has set EMU up in good field position all season long. Currently, the Eagles are 18th in the country in kickoff returns, averaging 26.93 per game. Individually, redshirt sophomore Blake Banham is 16th in the nation, third in the MAC in kickoff returns, averaging 30 yards per return.

COLE GARDNER NAMED A SEMIFINALIST FOR NFF CAMPBELL TROPHY: Redshirt senior offensive lineman Cole Gardner is one of 156 individuals nominated for this year's William V. Campbell Trophy. The Campbell Trophy is recognized as college football's premier scholar-athlete award. Gardner is pursuing his master's degree in business administration at EMU after graduating in April with a 3.46 GPA in supply chain management.

ON THE HORIZON: EMU will hit the road again and travel to Athens, Ohio for a showdown with MAC East leader Ohio University, Saturday, Oct. 15. Kickoff from Athens is set for 2 p.m. on ESPN3
