YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team was swept by Northern Illinois University, 25-15, 25-18, 25-19, in a Mid-American Conference tilt at the Convocation Center, Saturday, Oct. 1. The Eagles (7-10, 2-2 MAC) struggled offensively, while the Huskies (12-4, 4-0 MAC) hit at a .356 percentage on their way to a 3-0 match.
Senior Devon Murray (Shelby, Ohio-Shelby) and sophomore Jordan Smith (Solon, Iowa-Solon) led the Green and White's offensive attack, posting nine kills apiece while freshman Alysa Sutton (Gaston, Ind.-Wes-Del) posted six. Freshman Riley Taylor (Indianapolis, Ind.-Perry Meridian) maintained the setting duties, notching 20 assists, while sophomore Alyssa LaFace (Allen Park, Mich.-Allen Park) notched 14 digs to lead the way for the Eastern Michigan defense.
The Eagles struggled at the net in the opening frame, hitting just .079 through the set. The Huskies, on the other hand, were hot offensively, posting a .333 attack percentage. Murray was a force on the offensive end for the Green and White, hitting at a perfect 4-for-4 clip. EMU was able to grab a pair of the blocks, but ultimately fell, 25-15, in the first set.
Set two was much of the same for Eastern Michigan, as the Huskies continued to hit at a high percentage of .344 as they took down Eastern 25-18 to take a two set lead heading into the break. Smith was strong at the net, posting five kills, while Sutton and Ferguson each contributed a pair of kills, but the Green and White's .143 attack percentage wasn't enough to deter NIU in set two.
Eastern was able to manage a .167 attack percentage in the final frame of the match, but the Huskies were took much offensively, hitting .393. Murray grabbed four kills in the frame, while three other Eagles had a pair of kills in the 25-19 setback in the final frame.
The Eagles return to action Thursday, Oct. 6, when they travel to Mount Pleasant, Mich. to square off with MAC West and in-state rival Central Michigan University. First serve at McGuirk Arena is slated for 7 p.m.
