After winning the doubles point, EMU won just one singles match

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – Following its first contest of the 2016 championship season at Michigan State University, the Eastern Michigan University tennis team traveled to Purdue University Sunday, Jan. 17, to square off with the No. 44-ranked Boilermakers. Despite winning the doubles point, the Eagles (0-2) dropped 5-of-6 singles matches in the 5-2 defeat.

"Our doubles play was better today, however we had an imbalance in performance in the singles spots," stated Head Coach Ryan Ray. "We have a good base for success, and if we continue to improve we can win these types of challenging matches."

Eastern opened up doubles play strong with a pair of victories to capture an early 1-0 lead. At No. 1-doubles, Andrea Martinovska and Klara Supejova defeated Deborah Suarez and Kristina Kapitany, 6-3, while Marie Mayerova and Ani Gogvadze teamed up to knock off Andjela Djokovic and Marta Ruedas-Burgas, 6-4.

Supejova was the only Eagle to come away victorious in singles play. The senior three-time All-Mid-American Conference award winner took down Suarez at No. 1-singles easily in two sets, 6-3, 6-0. Only Anna Veleva was able to force a third set in singles play for EMU, but she fell, 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (4), at the No. 5 spot for Eastern.

The Eagles return to the court to take on Oakland University in their home opener Friday, Jan. 22, at the Chippewa Racquet Club. First serve is slated for 1 p.m. on Friday afternoon.
