The Green and White dropped a 5-2 decision in East Lansing
EAST LANSING, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Eastern Michigan University's tennis team began the spring championship season Saturday, Jan. 16, when it traveled north to No. 69-ranked Michigan State University to square off with the Spartans. The Eagles (0-1) dropped a 5-2 decision at the hands of MSU.
"We didn't play our best tennis today and we needed a little more to get the win," remarked Head Coach Ryan Ray. "Our doubles play wasn't good, but we responded well at the top four singles positions. If we can improve on this performance and become better finishers, I like where we can end this year."
In doubles play, the Green and White dropped their No. 2 and 3 matches, forcing the No. 1 match to end. At the No. 2 spot, Marie Mayerova made her NCAA debut when she teamed up with Ani Gogvadze. The duo fell, 6-0, before Anna Veleva and Renu Sharma fell, 6-1, to Lexi Baylis and Emily Meyers at the No. 3 position.
Singles action saw Sharma drop the No. 6 singles match, 6-0, 6-2, before Klara Supejova gave the Eagles their first win of the match, 6-2, 6-1, topping Davina Nguyen at No. 1 singles. MSU's Allie Baer gave the No. 69-ranked squad a 3-1 lead by defeating Veleva, 6-4, 6-1, at the No. 5 singles spot. Mayerova brought the Green and White back within one by taking down Baylis in a three-setter, 6-2, 5-7, 6-2. Andrea Martinovska was next to finish her match as Athena Trouillot was able to knock off the sophomore in three sets, 2-6, 6-1, 7-5, to seal a victory by the Spartans. Gogvadze and Aslina Chua completed the match with a three-setter of their own. Chua took the No. 4 singles match, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4, to close out the match.
The Green and White will finish the opening weekend of their 2016 spring campaign Sunday, Jan. 17, when it squares off with Purdue University at 10 a.m.
