YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – After a successful end to the fall season at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Midwest Regional, the Eastern Michigan University women's tennis team will hit the road for their first matches of the 2016 championship season this weekend, Jan. 16-17. The Eagles will first travel to No. 69-ranked Michigan State Unviersity Saturday, Jan. 16, for an 11 a.m. match before continuing their road trip to No. 44-ranked Purdue University, Jan. 17, at 10 a.m.
Eastern Michigan is no stranger to facing their in-state rival, Michigan State. The Green and White has met with the Spartans on 37 occasions, winning just five of them. The Eagles' last victory over the Spartans came during the 2004 campaign when EMU knocked off Michigan State, 4-3, Feb. 6. Last year against MSU, Eastern dropped a 5-2 decision in East Lansing, Mich. Former Eagle Daphne Friedrichs took down Catherine Parenteau in the No. 4 singles spot, 4-6, 6-3, 4-1, ret., while Ani Gogvadze (Tbilisi, Georgia-Khikhani) dropped Aslina Chua, 6-3, 6-3, in the second singles slot.
EMU and Purdue have a much briefer history than the Spartans. Eastern holds a 6-8 overall record heading into the 15th all-time meeting between the Boilermakers and the Eagles. The last time the Green and White traveled to West Lafayette, Ind. was back on Jan. 22, 2010 when EMU was handed a 7-0 loss. In the previous meeting during the 1992 season, the Green and White dispatched of the Boilermakers, 6-3.
