Eagles Continue Indoor Season with Eubanks Open Victory

ALLENDALE, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) —
The Eastern Michigan University women's track & field team returned to competition today, Jan. 15, at the Eubanks Open in Allendale, Mich. The distance group had a strong day, positing a number of event wins throughout the event, leading the team to a first-place finish with a total of 135.5 points in the scored meet.

"We had ups and downs in some areas but overall, it was a solid showing for us," stated Head Coach Sue Parks. "But it's just a starting point and the goal right now is to continue to work hard in practice and show improvement in each meet.  We're excited to compete at home next weekend."

The day began with freshman Rebekah Carr (Celina, Ohio - Celina) participating in the pentathlon. In the 60m hurdles, Carr finished fifth in 9.65s, while she also took third in the high jump with a mark of 1.49 meters/4 feet 10.50 inches. In the 800m run, the Celina, Ohio native took the top spot, finishing first with a time of 2:36.53. In the shot put, Carr took eighth, while she also nabbed fourth in the long jump. Overall, the freshman finished the pentathlon with 2874 points, good for fourth place.

The Eagles were well represented in the 60m dash, as the team had three runners finish within the top-10 of the prelims. The Green and White were represented by senior Aaliyah McKinney (South Bend, Ind. - John Adams) and freshman Jessica Harris (Slidell, La. - Slidell) in the finals, with McKinney finishing second and posting a time of 7.57. Harris was just behind her in fourth, crossing the finish line in 7.68.

In the 200m, the Green and White had five competitors in the top-10. McKinney paced the team, taking second in 24.65, while senior Morgan Yeadon (Indianapolis, Ind. - Pike) nabbed fifth with a time of 24.85 and set a new personal best. Sophomore Chante Roberts (Lansing, Mich. - Waverly) crossed the finish line in seventh, also setting a career best. Rounding out the top-10 was sophomore Jasmine Jones (Greensburg, Pa. - Hempfield Area) and Harris in ninth and tenth, respectively.

In the 400m dash, junior Khadesha James (Irvington, N.J.) paced the Eagles, coming in second with a time of 57.41. Just behind her in fourth was senior Iesha Hardiman (Santa Clara, Calif. - Adrian Wilcox), crossing the finish line in 58.01. Junior Dayna Hurd (Carson, Calif. - Carson) posted a huge improvement on her career best, as she notched a mark of 58.73, nearly five seconds faster than her previous personal best.

Moving to the 800m, the Green and White once again paced the field, as sophomores Jenna Wyns (Londerzeel, Belgium - Sportschol KA2) and Rebekah Branham (Circleville, Ohio - Circleville) took the top two spots. Both set new career bests, as Wyns finished in 2:12.14, good for eighth in program history, and Branham crossed the finish line in 2:15.00. Sophomore Claire Mesa (Rockford, Ill. - Rockford Lutheran) and senior Rebecca Quaintance (White Lake, Mich. - Walled Lake Northern) also had solid races, finishing fifth and seventh, respectively, 

The Green and White dominated in the mile, as senior Sofie Gallein (Gits, Belgium - University of Leuven) and junior Alsu Bogdanova (Kazan, Russia - Lyceum #83) took home first and second in the event. Both notched career bests, as Gallein clocked in at 4:48.69, with Bogdanova just behind her at 4:51.05. Additionally, Gallein improved her seventh-place all time mark, while Bogdanova now sits in ninth in EMU history. Sophomore Jordann McDermitt (Davison, Mich. - Davison) also turned in a nice race, coming in fourth with a time of 4:53.16. Rounding out the top-10 for EMU was sophomore Danielle Bentzley (Birmingham, Mich. - Seaholm) in tenth, crossing the finish line in 5:06.99.

McDermitt continued her solid day in the 3000m, finishing second with a time of 9:38.16. A pair of freshmen also ran in the race, with Sydney Meyers (Zionsville, Ind. - Zionsville Community) finishing seventh in 10:17.02 and Leah Wallace (Reynoldsburg, Ohio - Reynoldsburg) crossing the finish line in 30th.

Three Eagles participated in the 60m hurdles, with all three qualifying to the finals. Senior Maya Carter (Racine, Wis. - Case) was the top EMU finisher, taking sixth in 8.90. Just behind her was freshman Ayanna O'Neal (Cincinnati, Ohio - Withrow University) in seventh with a time of 9.02, while sophomore Tifani Byrd (Toms River, N.J. - Toms River North) rounded out the Green and White in eighth with a mark of 9.08.

The EMU team of James, Hardiman, Carter, and Roberts managed to take second in the 4x400m relay with a time of 3:51.52, while the group of Branham, Mesa, Wyns, and Quaintance took ninth. In the high jump, Kristina Coyne  (Pittsburgh, Pa. - Chartiers Valley) managed to finish ninth with a jump of 1.61 meters/ 5 feet 3.25 inches.

EMU notched another event win in the form of the pole vault, as senior Ellie Braidic (Pandora, Ohio - Pandora-Gilboa) finished first with a mark of 4.01 meters/13 feet 1.75 inches. Junior Janina Pollatz (Grandville, Mich. - Grand Rapids Christian) rounded out the top-three, finishing third with a vault of 3.81 meters/12 feet 6 inches. 

In the long jump, freshman Alexis Daniel (Painesville, Ohio - Thomas W. Harvey) was the lone Green and White competitor, notching 24th with a jump of 4.77 meters/ 15 feet 7.75 inches. Continuing on, the Eagles had three student-athletes in the weight throw, with junior Megan Pendleton (Lindsey, Ohio - Woodmore) pacing the trio with a mark of 14.51 meters/47 feet 7.25 inches, moving her up to eighth in EMU history.

The Green and White continue their season at home with the EMU Triangular, Jan. 23.
