Matt Shepard Named Michigan Sportscaster of the Year

The voice of EMU football collects the award for the first time in his career
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Eastern Michigan University football play-by-play voice Matt Shepard has been named Michigan Sportscaster of the Year for the first time in his career, as announced by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association Monday, Jan. 11.
NSSA members annually elect print and radio/television winners from each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia. Joe Rexrode of the Detroit Free Press was selected as the Michigan Sportswriter of the Year for the first time in his career.
Winners will be introduced at the 57th annual NSSA Awards Weekend, June 18-20, in Salisbury, N.C. Sharing the stage will be National Sportscaster of the Year Mike 'Doc' Emrick of NBC Sports and National Sportswriter of the Year Tom Verducci of Sports Illustrated and SI.com. Chris Berman of ESPN/ABC, Billy Packer of Raycom/NBC/CBS, Gary Smith of Sports Illustrated and the late author, David Halberstam, will be inducted into the NSSA Hall of Fame.
The 2015 season marked the 15th year that Shepard called the action on the field for the EMU football broadcast team on WEMU (89.1 FM). Shepard first handled EMU football play-by-play duties during the 1999 season. He returned in 2002 and has held the post ever since. A widely known football and basketball broadcaster, Shepard is also the voice of University of Michigan men's basketball team as well as the morning drive host on WDFN (1130 AM) in Detroit.
During his career, he has called NFL Europe games for FOX and, in 2005, Arena Football League games for Fox Sports and was the broadcast voice for a pair of WNBA Championships by the Detroit Shock. Shepard's Fox Sports Detroit resume also includes extensive work as a reporter and studio host for the Detroit Lions, Detroit Pistons and Detroit Tigers, and play-by-play work for the Michigan High School Athletic Association football state finals and the college hockey television package.
