The Eagles didn't lose a match on their way to the Hampton Inn Invitational championship

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – Eastern Michigan University volleyball's senior outside hitter Stacey Perinar was named the Most Valuable Player of the 2015 Hampton Inn Invitational after the Eagles (5-1) completed their second sweep of the day, knocking off the University of North Carolina Charlotte, 3-0, Saturday, Sept. 5, at "The Jungle" on the campus of IUPUI. Eastern used 25-22, 25-23 and 25-22 set decisions to make quick work of the 49ers (2-4).

Along with Perinar being named the inviational's MVP, Devon Murray and Jordan Smith each earned spots on the all-tournament team following their successful weekends. Jordan Smith was the leader offensively in EMU's victory over Charlotte, putting together her best performance since putting on the Eastern Michigan uniform. She posted a career-high 15 kills, making just three errors on 25 attempts, good for a .480 attack percentage, while Perinar and Kelsey Jones each netted eight kills. Cassie Haut added seven of her own as the Eagles hit .275 for the match. Mallory Rajewski and Alyssa Davis split time setting for the Green and White as Rajewski posted 23 assists and Davis notched 18. Defensively, Corynne Smith continued to excel, picking up 17 digs, while Perinar added 12 of her own. At the net, the Eagles recorded eight team blocks. Jones and Katie Krasowski each notched four block assists, while Haut had three and Murray had two, along with a solo block.

Eastern opened the match by hitting just .190 in the first set, but the Eagles spread out the offense as three student-athletes came away with four kills, including a 4-for-6 attack performance from Jones. Despite its least impressive offensive set, EMU leaned on Corynne Smith to keep the Green and White in the set. The senior libero recorded seven digs in the opening frame, helping lead the Eagles to their 15 kills. Eastern used three aces and three blocks to keep Charlotte from making a move, holding on to a 25-22 set victory.

Leading 1-0 after the opening frame, Eastern turned up the heat offensively in the second set. Jordan Smith came out firing, going 6-of-8 in her attack attempts. The freshman led all players in the set, while Perinar added five kills of her own. Corynne Smith continued to shine from the back row, recording eight digs, while Rajewski setup the offense for the majority of the set, piling up 10 assists on EMU's way to a 2-0 lead following the 25-23 decision. As a squad, Eastern hit .333 in the second set.

EMU's offense didn't slow down following the halftime break. The Eagles hit .308 in the final set of the match, dispatching the 49ers, 25-22. Jordan Smith continued to strike the ball, adding five more kills to her total, while Jones notched three and Krasowski, Murray and Perinar each net a pair. On the back of three total blocks and 20 digs, the Eagles held Charlotte to just a .195 attack percentage to win the match 3-0, while also going 3-0 in the Hampton Inn Invitational.

Eastern returns to the court next weekend, Sept. 11-12, when it travels to Terra Haute, Ind. for the Sycamore Classic, hosted by Indiana State University. The Eagles will play in a pair of matches both Friday and Saturday, starting with a familiar foe in IPFW Friday afternoon, Sept. 11, at 4 p.m.
