Eagles Split on First Day of Holiday Inn Classic

EMU defeated IPFW before falling to Indiana State
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – Eastern Michigan University's volleyball team split a doubleheader at the Indiana State University Holiday Inn Classic Friday, Sept. 11, in Terre Haute, Ind. The Eagles (6-2) first defeated IPFW in four sets, 25-22, 21-25, 25-18, 28-26, before falling to the host Indiana State later in the evening, 17-25, 20-25, 25-16, 20-25.
Stacey Perinar led the Eagles with 19 kills and 17 digs, while Jordan Smith added 13 kills and 11 digs. Alyssa Davis posted 26 assists and 15 digs and Mallory Rajewski recorded 27 assists of her own. Corynne Smith tied Perinar for the team lead in digs with 17 of her own. As a team, the Eagles notched a season-high 11 blocks on the match.
Perinar and Jordan Smith led the way in set one with five and four kills, respectively. Davis, Perinar and Corynne Smith each posted five digs and the team hit at a .333 average in the set. IPFW hit at a .308 percentage but EMU was able to out-do the Mastodons, 25-22, in the first set of the match.
The Eagles fell dropped the second set, 21-25, despite posting four blocks in the set. Devon Murray led EMU, hitting at an .800 percentage, while Jordan Smith posted four kills in the set. On the other side of the net, Nicole Rightnowar recorded six of the Mastodons' 15 kills in the set.
Tied at one-set apiece, EMU came out swinging, posting a .361 hitting percentage with Perinar notching seven kills on 16 attempts with one error, while Jordan Smith added three and Kelsey Jones and Katie Krasowski each posted a pair. Eastern held IPFW to a .152 attack percentage in the set, grabbing a 25-18 set victory.
Eastern Michigan needed extra points to post their final four set victory, but it was EMU's defense that led the way to a 28-26 final set. Jones stuffed the Mastodons with two solo blocks, while Krasowski added a solo of her own on the Eagles' way to four team blocks. EMU hit .186 in the set, but held IPFW to a .136 percentage en route to their sixth win of the 2015 season.
In the second match of the evening, the Eagles were led by Perinar and Jordan Smith, both of which posted double-doubles. Perinar recorded 12 kills and 19 digs, while Jordan Smith notched 11 kills and 10 digs. Davis and Rajewski each notched 17 assists, while defensively, Corynne Smith led the way with 27 digs. Katie Krasowski added six kills while Kelsey Jones added five of her own.
The Green and White lost the opening set, 17-25, as Perinar came away with half of her kills in the match. Eastern hit just .075 in the first frame, while Indiana State hit .303, spreading out the offense. The Sycamores had five student-athletes post two-or-more kills in the set with Melody Burdette leading the way, with four.
EMU was unable to post a positive attack percentage as they dropped set No. 2, 20-25. Despite holding the Sycamores to a .143 hitting percentage, EMU was blocked on five separate occasions and was unable to get the offense flowing and eventually falling behind 2-0 heading into the break.
Eastern Michigan came out flying on both sides of the net, hitting .242 while holding ISU to a -.043 attack percentage. The Eagles stuffed the Sycamores on five occasions with Jones posted three block assists in the set alone on EMU's way to a 25-16 win. Corynne Smith was strong on the defensive end, posting 10 digs in the frame.
The Eagles dropped the final set of the match, 20-25. ISU hit at a .326 percentage while EMU could only post a .146 on their way to losing just their second of the 2015 campaign.
Eastern Michigan continues the 2015 campaign Saturday, Sept. 12, with a pair of matches to close the Holiday Inn Classic. EMU will first square off with Murray State at 11:30 a.m. before taking on Tennessee Martin at 4:30 p.m. It will be the first time that the Eagles have taken on both squads.
