Eagles Drop Five Set Heartbreaker to Murray State

9/12/2015 3:02:00 PM | Volleyball

Redshirt freshman Mallory Rajewski and senior Stacey Perinar recorded double-doubles in the loss

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team dropped a five-set heartbreaker to Murray State University on day two of play at the Sycamore Holiday Inn Classic. Redshirt freshman Mallory Rajewski (Midland, Mich.-Midland) and senior Stacey Perinar (Channahon, Ill.-Minooka Community) recorded double-doubles in the the Eagles' loss. Rajewski led the way with 23 assists while adding 10 digs. Perinar continued her hitting rampage, tallying 18 kills and 16 digs.

Struggling to find a rhythm offensively, the Eagles negative hitting percentages in the first two sets put them on the verge of defeat, 2-0.

Playing to a 6-6 tie in the third set, a 5-1 run by Murray State forced EMU Head Coach Kimi Olson to burn a timeout.

Olson's timeout proved timely as the Eagles returned to the court rejuvenated. Earning the serve on a Racers' service error, the serving of senior Dori Harrison (Euclid, Ohio-Beaumont) forced Murray State to play out of system. Fueled by Harrison's serving, Rajewski dished out assists to a number of Eagles to give EMU a 13-11 lead. The Eagles' 5-0 run turned the tables on the Racers, forcing a Murray State timeout.

Out of the break, the Eagles and Racers battled back and forth, playing to a 26-26 tie at which point the Green and White took over. A kill by redshirt senior Katie Krasowski (Oak Lawn, Ill.-Marist) followed by an attacking error by the Racers, lifted EMU to a 28-26 win to force a fourth set.

Trailing in the early goings, the Eagles took command of the set on an attacking error by the Racers. Holding a 10-9 edge, the Eagles rattled off five straight points to extend their lead to six, 15-9.

While the Eagles' defense held the Racers to an abysmal -.125 hitting percentage, the Green and White cruised to a 25-18 victory to level the match a two.
In the fifth set, the Eagles hit a match-best .273 but could not overcome a late charge by the Racers. With the Eagles in front 10-8, Murray State rallied around the play of Scottie Ingram to take the set, 15-13, and the match 3-2.

The Eagles return to the court this afternoon, Sept. 12, at 4:30 p.m. for their fourth and final match of the invitational. EMU's match with University of Tennessee-Martin is set to start at 4:30 p.m.
