Eastern opened the Flyer Invitational with a 3-0 win against Jacksonville

DAYTON, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – Eastern Michigan University's volleyball team returned to the court Friday afternoon, Sept. 18, for its first match at the Flyer Invitational, hosted by the University of Dayton. The Eagles (8-3) dispatched of Jacksonville University with ease, defeating the Dolphins (3-7), 25-13, 25-18, 25-16, at the Frericks Center.

Stacey Perinar (Channahon, Ill.-Minooka Community)
paced the EMU offense with 12 kills, while Jordan Smith (Solon, Iowa-Solon) followed up with six and Cassie Haut (Monroe, Mich.-St. Mary's Catholic Central), Katie Krasowski (Oak Lawn, Ill.-Marist) and Devon Murray (Shelby, Ohio-Shelby) each had five apiece. In all, it was a team effort on both sides of the net that led Eastern to its eighth win of 2015. As a team, the Eagles hit at a .310 clip, which is their second-best mark of the season, while also recording a .978 reception percentage, also their second-highest of the campaign. In addition, the Green and White posted a season-high nine aces in the three sets, good for three per frame, doubling their set average on the season. On the defensive side of the ball, Kelsey Jones (Reed City, Mich.-Reed City) and Haut each had five block assists, while Corynne Smith (Norwalk, Ohio-St. Paul) led Eastern with nine digs.

In the opening frame, the Eagles hit at an astounding .409 percentage following the arms of Krasowski and Jordan Smith. Krasowski went a perfect 3-for-3 in attack attempts, while Smith was 2-for-2. Perinar added three kills in the frame, meanwhile Haut and Murray each had a pair. Defensively, the Green and White held the Dolphins to an .038 attack percentage, allowing just seven kills in the frame. In addition, Eastern was so strong offensively that Jacksonville was unable to record a block in the entire set as EMU cruised to a 25-13 first set victory.

The Eastern Michigan offense slowed down a touch in its 25-18 second set win, but Perinar made sure the Eagles would have enough fire power to take a two-set lead heading into the break. The Channahon, Ill. native went 7-for-14 in her attack attempts, while Haut and Jones combined for four team blocks, with four block assists each. Again, the EMU defense stymied Jacksonville, holding the Dolphins to a .125 attack percentage as the Eagles stretched the lead to a pair of sets.

Following the break, Eastern's defense continued its strong play, keeping the Dolphins under the .100 mark. On their way to a 25-16 set win, the Eagles hit at a .273 clip, while Jacksonville posted just an .091 attack percentage. Murray led the offense with three kills, while Haut, Krasowski and Jordan Smith each recorded a pair in the final set of the match.

Eastern continues the Flyer Invitational Saturday, Sept. 19, when the Eagles compete in a doubleheader at the Frericks Center. EMU will first square off with Illinois State University at 4 p.m. before taking on the host, Dayton, in the final match of the tournament at 7 p.m.
