Freshmen Cassie Haut and Jordan Smith each hit above .500 in the victory

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – Eastern Michigan University's volleyball team used a balanced offensive attack to continue its hot start to the 2015 campaign Saturday afternoon, Sept. 5, with a victory over IUPUI in the second match of the IUPUI Hampton Inn Invitational. The Eagles (4-1) had four student-athletes hit at a .350-or-better clip to record the victory over the Jaguars (3-3), 25-17, 25-23, 25-21.

Freshman Cassie Haut put together the best performance of her young collegiate career. The Monroe, Mich. native notched a career-high 12 kills on 18 attempts with just two errors, good for a .556 attack percentage. Another freshman, Jordan Smith, showed off her talent in the victory, hitting .571 with nine kills and just one error. Stacey Perinar continued her streak of recording double-digit kills in each match this season.

EMU used its defense to keep the Jaguars offense at bay, stuffing the home team on seven tries to go along with a 48 digs in the match. At the net, Kelsey Jones led the Eagles with five block assists, while Corynne Smith posted 19 digs, which was good for a match-high. As a team, the Green and White hit .340, its best offensive performance of the season as a team.

Eastern Michigan set the tone in the opening set, hitting .500 without an error (15-of-30). Haut and Jordan Smith each posted four kills, while three other Eagles added a pair in the 25-17 set victory. Corynne Smith countered the Jaguars' attack by picking up eight digs in the frame. EMU held IUPUI to a .222 attack percentage, allowing 12 kills in the frame.

EMU continued its strong play at the net in the second frame, claiming a 25-23 set victory for a 2-0 lead at the break. Haut continued her offensive dominance, posting five more kills in the frame while Perinar added three. As a team, the Eagles notched four total blocks, include four solos from Jones.

Eastern came out of the break determined to cap off the sweep and did just that, 25-21. Perinar led the charge with six kills, while Haut and Jordan Smith added three each. Despite just one block in the set, the Eagles held IUPUI to a .195 attack percentage as the defense saw Corynne Smith and Mallory Rajewski pick up the slack from the back line. Smith grabbed six digs, while Rajewski recorded four in the set.

Eastern closes out the 2015 Hampton Inn Invitational Saturday afternoon when it squares off with Charlotte. The Eagles and 49ers hit the hardwood at The Jungle at 4:30 p.m.
