Eagles Defeat West Virginia in Four Sets

9/4/2015 7:47:00 PM | Volleyball

It was the first win over a Big 12 school since 2004

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – First-year Head Volleyball Coach Kimi Olson and the Eastern Michigan University volleyball team knocked off Big 12 Conference opponent West Virginia University Friday, Sept. 4, in its first match of the 2015 IUPUI Hampton Inn Invitational. The Eagles (3-1) defeated the Mountaineers (1-3) in four sets, 25-20, 23-25, 25-13, 25-20. The victory was Eastern Michigan's second win over a Big 12 opponent in program history and the first in exactly 11 years when the Green and White knocked off Baylor University, Sept. 4, 2004.

The Eagle offense, which hit .291 for the match, was led by senior outside hitter Stacey Perinar who tied her career-high in kills with 20. It was the first time she hit that mark since EMU defeated Canisius, 3-1, Aug. 30, 2013. Perinar hit .327 for the match, while junior Devon Murray was no slouch at the net, picking up 10 kills on 18 attempts, with just three errors. Mallory Rajewski started at the setter position, posting 25 assists for a career-best and defensively, Corynne Smith recorded 17 digs to lead the Green and White.

Eastern opened the first set with a 25-20 win to get out to a 1-0 lead. The Eagles defense kept West Virginia at bay, stuffing the Mountaineers four times at the net, while holding WVU to an .061 attack percentage in the opening frame. Perinar led the Eagles with four kills, hitting at a .571 clip, while Cassie Haut added a 3-for-3 performance in her attacks.

West Virginia came back to take the second set, 23-25. Despite Perinar notching six kills and Murray hitting .571 with five kills, the Eagles saw WVU hit .214, while blocking EMU on three occasions. The Achilles heel for Eastern in the set was its serve receive. The Mountaineers aced the Eagles on five occasions to knot up match heading into the break.

Eastern Michigan's offense stormed out of the locker room in the third frame, hitting .583 with 16 kills and just two errors on its way to a 25-13 set victory. Perinar was the catalyst in the frame going 7-for-10 in her attack attempts, while Katie Krasowski went a perfect 3-for-3. Alyssa Davis and Rajewski each put forth a strong effort, totaling 14 assists between the two.

Eastern closed out the match with a 25-20 win in the fourth frame. EMU posted four blocks as a team, while Kelsey Jones was the leader offensively, going 4-of-5 at the net, while Perinar and Haut added three and two kills, respectively. The Eagles held WVU to a .167 attack percentage on their way to their third victory of the 2015 campaign.

Eastern Michigan returns to the court Saturday, Sept. 5, when it competes in a pair of matches at the Hampton Inn Invitational. Saturday begins with a 12:30 p.m. match between the tournament host IUPUI and EMU, before Eastern takes on UNC Charlotte Saturday afternoon at 4:30 p.m.
