EMU Drops Opening MAC Match in Four Sets at WMU

After dropping two sets, EMU was unable to make a comeback
KALAMAZOO, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team opened the 2015 Mid-American Conference season with a 3-1 loss on the road at Western Michigan University. The Eagles (8-6, 0-1 MAC) saw the Broncos (5-11, 1-0 MAC) take the first two sets, 25-23, 25-19, before EMU took set three, 27-25, but Western responded with a 26-24 victory in the final set of the match.
Stacey Perinar (Channahon, Ill.-Minooka Community) led the way with 22 kills, while Devon Murray (Shelby, Ohio-Shelby) added nine. As a team, the Eagles hit at just a .144 attack percentage, while Western hit at a .239 clip. Mallory Rajewski (Midland, Mich.-Midland) recorded a career- best 31 assists, while Corynne Smith (Norwalk, Ohio-St. Paul) led the EMU defense with 16 digs in the contest.
Western set the tone in the first set, hitting .423, while the Green and White mustered just a .133 attack percentage. Perinar recorded seven of her kills, but Alysia Boznik responded with six, while Bailey Schnell posted three kills on three attempts. WMU needed just six digs in the 25-23 set victory as EMU made 10 attack errors in the set.
The Eagles fell behind 2-0 when Western Michigan posted a 25-19 win in the second set. Eastern struggled again offensively, hitting just .075 in the frame. Perinar added five more kills, but EMU saw the Broncos hit .268 and overpower it to a two-set lead as the squads headed into the break.
Eastern Michigan rattled off its best offensive set in the third when it hit at a .244 clip. The Eagles held Western to a .118 mark, forcing the Broncos into eight errors. Perinar and Murray each recorded four kills, including a 4-for-8 performance from Murray. Rajewski put together 10 assists in the frame EMU came back within one set in the match.
The Eagles looked to knot things up in the fourth set, but Western's offense proved to be too much in the 26-24 set loss for EMU. The Broncos had just five errors in the set, while Eastern doubled that number, falling 26-24 in the final set of the match. Schnell was the difference maker for WMU, going 4-of-7 in the frame. Perinar posted six of her kills in the final set, while Katie Krasowski (Oak Lawn, Ill.-Marist) posted four.
The Eagles return to action Saturday, Sept. 26, at 7 p.m. CT from the Convocation Center in DeKalb, Ill. EMU will square off with Northern Illinois.
