EMU had six total victories between doubles and singles

AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University tennis team opened up the 2015-16 campaign with the first day of the Air Force Academy Invitational Friday, Sept. 18, at the Air Force Academy. The Eagles came away from day one with six wins in total, four in singles and a pair in doubles action.

Doubles play began early in the morning, with singles action to follow. Klara Supejova and Andrea Martinovska continued where they left off last season, dispatching Colorado State University's Aina Hernandez Soler and Madison Porter, 6-4, and Ani Gogvadze and Maria Paula Ribero teamed up to knock off Emily Kalbow and Celine Voss by the same tally. The duo of Anna Veleva and Alejandra Barcelo Almoyna dropped a 6-2 decision, while Renu Sharma teamed up with the University of Wyoming's Natsya Tokareva but fell, 6-3.

In singles play, Supejova made quick work of Utah State University's Nini Guensler, 6-1, 6-4. while Martinovska also defeated an USU opponent. She knocked off Sabrina Demerath, 6-4, 0-6, 6-0, while Gogvadze defeated Utah State's Maggie O'Meara in two sets, 6-3, 6-1. Ribero was the Eagles' last victory, defeating Monika Van De Vondel, another Aggie, 7-5, 5-7, 6-2. Veleva fell to USU's Lexi Turley, 6-2, 6-3, while Sharms dropped a 7-6, 7-5 decision at the hands of Air Force's Meredith Laskey and Barcelo fell in three sets, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4.

"It looked like a first day out there," remarked Head Tennis Coach Ryan Ray. " It wasn't the best tennis, but we fought fairly well in the end of matches.  The key is to win the majority of the matches and we did that, now we will strive for stronger tennis each day."

The Eagles continue the AFA Invitational Saturday, Sept. 19, when they will begin with doubles action again at 9 a.m. MT. Each student-athlete will compete in one doubles and one singles match on Saturday.
