Redshirt freshman Mallory Rajewski registered a double-double in the win
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – Hours after falling in a five set heartbreaker, the Eastern Michigan University women's volleyball team rebounded with a five set win over University of Tennessee-Martin to close out play at the Sycamore Holiday Inn Invitational, Saturday, Sept. 12. Redshirt freshman Mallory Rajewski (Midland, Mich.-Midland) and senior Corynne Smith (Norwalk, Ohio-St. Paul) led the Eagles to a 3-2 win over the Skyhawks.
Taking control from the start, the Eagles jumped out to a 4-1 lead behind the stifling serve of Dori Harrison (Euclid, Ohio-Beaumont). A trio of aces by Harrison fueled the Eagles to an early lead, an edge they held for a majority of the set.
UT-Martin leveled the score at 10 before the Eagles' defensive effort led by Samantha Falco (Antioch, Ill.-Antioch) fueled the Green and White to a 15-11 lead, forcing a timeout by the Skyhawks. Unfortunately for UT-Martin, the timeout could not turn the momentum. A block by Devon Murray (Shelby, Ohio-Shelby)
capped a 9-2 run by the Eagles, extending their lead to 24-13 before a UT-Martin attacking error gave EMU the set one win, 25-16.
Fighting their way back from an early deficit, the Eagles took an 8-6 lead on another ace by Harrison before pushing their advantage to 10-6 on a kill by Murray.
The Skyhawks responded, pulling within two late but, the Eagles prevailed. Out of a UT-Martin timeout, EMU used kills by Jordan Smith (Solon, Iowa-Solon) and Stacey Perinar (Channahon, Ill.-Minooka) to take the set, 25-20.
With the Eagles holding a 2-0 lead in the match, the Skyhawks took sets three and four to force a decisive fifth set.
Playing to a 3-3 tie in the final set, the Eagles benefited from a pair of Skyhawks' errors to take an early lead. Between a balanced attack and a solid defensive effort forcing UT-Martin errors, the Eagles cruised to a 15-10 win in set five to take the match, 3-2.
With the win the Eagles move to 7-3 on the season and 2-2 at the Sycamore Holiday Inn Invitational.
The Green and White return to the court next weekend, Sept. 18-19, at the Flyer Tournament in Dayton, Ohio. The Eagles open the tournament Friday, Sept. 18, against Jacksonville at 4 p.m.
